New duck boat

Postby huntall6 » Sun Sep 30, 2012 10:41 pm

picked up this cherry at an auction for a whopping $100. came with a 40hp motor (Johnson, not running, but not locked up), boat and trailer (with titles), a foot controlled trolling motor (works), five anchors, and a set of skis  . figured i couldnt go wrong! its a glass 1446 tri-hull, and it very solid. i am putting a 25hp from my pontoon boat on the back, and putting the steering and controls in the front to help me watch out for stumps in the dark because i am usually hunting alone. the main goal with this boat is WIDE OPEN! i am moving into this one from a 1436 (i think) v-bottom with 3 seats, so the more space i can get, the better. i also plan on doing some form of blind but haven't decided on what type yet. i will try to post pics as i go. suggestions are welcomed because this will be my first build. let me know what you think!

5 Anchors? Is this thing actually 57 feet long, and you are a giant that lives in a giant universe, surrounded by giant sized stuff that only looks normal because we see only pictures of it in your giant sized universe?

Just kidding. I'd love to find a deal like that. You think the motor can be fixed?

So far I have torn out the rear seat, the storage box, taken off the trolling motor and fish finder hardware, and smoothed out where the stuff was glasses in.

i have also taken the motor off the pontoon and put it on, and mocked up how i am going to run the wiring and cables (i think). it was too dark for pics though. i really am liking how tall the sides are.

i am glad that's not the case!! he!! i am only 5'6" i would be more than lost.

i haven't looked that close at it, but i am confident i can get it to run. the lower unit kinda scares me though. i am hoping to put it on the pontoon when i get it fixed. if i cant get it working, i will be in the market for a new motor for the pontoon boat.

Is it an aluminum block? If so, you could maybe get $50 at the scrap yard.

I'd make sure if floats before I'd do much more work.

You don't want to have a bunch of time and money wrapped into it to find out it takes on water

I agree with Dan. Plus, if you have glass repair to do on the inside, under the floor, you'll have to tear out the work you've already done to get to it.

Hell with that. If it needs repairs sell it to someone else for $150.

i really havent done any work as far as adding things. just torn out the back seat and storage, about 2hrs worth of work, i have literally just mocked the cables up to make sure that they will work and stuck the motor on the back (i am needing to rebuild the transom on the pontoon anyway, so this will give me the chance). i am going to get it functional and take it on the water this coming weekend to make sure it is sound, and how it rides/drives, and to see how stable it is. if it takes on water, it will be promply be cut up and i will sell the trailer for probably around $250, then fix the motor (hopefully), and sell the 25hp. i also still have a little v-bottom to fall back on if this project doesnt work out. i just had to get it for $100, i needed a project anyway for the downtime between early season and regular season. i guess i shouldn't have made it sound like i am expecting this boat to be the end all be all solution to my problems.

Your sitting in the front! Boats ride smoother in the back! Your going to feel it up front in that boat is what that feller was saying I think. It will be fine for getting to and from hunting spots and hauling the coys!
