I guided a fellow the past couple days who is a skull boat fan from Northern California via Hawaii and learned there's more to it than just slowly slipping up on a raft of birds. Didn't know about the strategy of cutting a few from the herd, so there aren't as many eyes on the approaching boat, which decreases the likelihood of their worrying and swimming away to maintain safe distance from the strange object.

Interesting stuff, but my lazy ass would still rather just call 'em on over to be shot.
