Any coin collectors on here?

Postby T Man » Wed Dec 18, 2013 12:54 am

I just found an uncirculated 1879 Morgan silver dollar while cleaning out some stuff at my dads. It is the o mint mark. I have googled it and come up with values ranging from 100 to almost 4000. Anyone have a better idea on price?

Hey Tman- I have some my parents gave me of the silver and even a gold ones older than that. None of that stuff is valued what I would have guessed it to be. I think the only way it is really big money is if the quality of the coin is very high. To get that high of a rating it has to be certified. So the bottom line is to have all of your stuff looked at by an expert and ensure you get it valued right. The internet, in my opinion, has such wide ranges that it is almost worthless research.

If you can't get at least $20 for a silver dollar out of these silver/gold hoarders or doomsday preppers, you're not trying hard enough.

The only way you are getting top dollar for currency is if it is in mint condition. As in never touch by anyone. If you found it, my guess would be it's at the bottom of the spectrum. Whatever you do though, don't clean it, or you are looking at a shiny $20 bill.

At the gun show two weeks ago I talked to the coin/silver guy, I think he was getting $22 for 1 troy ounce rounds and about $30 for the morgans. Those were pretty beat up morgans though.

It is uncirculared. It was turned into a money clip and has a band around the outside and some sort of acrylic on both sides. I could throw this around in the gravel and not damage the coin. It was my grandpa's and just didn't k.ow if it were worth putting in my safety deposit box or just keep in my house safe.

I doubt that is going to classify as uncirculated if its been turned into a money clip unless the acrylic is just a case that can come off without damage.

Coin people, antique people, and art people are a bit creepy.
When they start calling it a "piece" I walk away.
