Finally......

....shot a limit of birds this year! With all of the new duck commanders spawned over the past year, out delta has been slammed with new hunters, and finding a place to get away from the crowd has gotten a lot harder. Had planned a creek hunt for Woodrow Saturday morning, but waking up to find the Southeast wind blowing 15-20 mph, opted for a bay hunt on the causeway instead. Despite the strong SE wind, we still had fog at daylight  Made it to the blind without incident, and was set up and ready before LST. The morning started off slow, but as the day progressed, the wind got stronger, and finally hard enough to force the birds out of the open water of the bay, looking for the shelter of the smaller bays North of the causeway, and was glad that the fog dissapated. No big numbers of birds, but every 30 minutes or so we would see a few groups gaddies drop in from the skies, and we were able to convince a few to join the party. Hunted until lunchtime, and ended the day with 9 grey ducks, 1 redhead, 1 spoonie, and 1 bufflehead I couldn't resist. Have killed ducks all season, but nowhere close to a limit on any of the trips other than the opener.

So that was you guys I heard shooting! I went up to little Bateau but only ended the morning with a pair of red heads.

Yes, damn birds have been somewhat unpredictable this year. There was another blind between you and me that did some hammering as well. My best days have been on strong South winds, when the bay kicks up enough to push the birds North of the causeway. On the flip side with a 25 mph North wind, they are stacking up at the North end of Mobile Bay, and moving as one huge group...........very frustrating! Definitely enjoyed hunting in short sleeves

From your report I should have stayed out a little longer!

Don't know how long you stayed out, but we did not see many birds moving before 8:30, when the wind got strong enough to move them off the bay, and they trickled in here and there until we finally reached a limit around lunchtime. No big numbers, but definitely worth the wait!

I got off the water round 10. Hunting alone if there aren't many birds flying it gets a little boring.

Try having a conversation with your dog. Its a little one sided. But it passes the time quite well.
