That Trimble app drops a line like that. But it will say you went 10 miles at 2,765 mph when you went maybe half a mile at 20 mph. I'm lookin for a simple-ish GPS but I do want a color backlit screen that shows the water and drops the line so I can follow it. I never thought of needing one til we got in that thick ass fog last weekend and couldn't even see the channel markers. If we hasn't had Ollys GPS we would likely have spent the night on that damn lake.

I picked up the Magellan 500le (similar to Olly's - I think JR too) for $64 on ebay. Not here yet for a review, but it seems to be the best one for that money.

I'd buy a Garmin Oregon 450 if I was buying new instead of "like new".

I found one for $80 new, with free shipping.

Betty, you sure this is what I'm looking for?

I've never used the etrex 10, but I've heard it is a decent GPS. It should have a plotter mode and mark waypoints. That's the 2 basic functions of any GPS I think.

Ive done a lot of GPSing with a handheld and tried very little with the 'app on your phone type' and hands down the actual GPS was best. The apps suck - drain your battery fast, harder to see the screen in sunlight, and I don't care what anybody says the gps reciever inside your phone is not nearly as accurate.
I'd stay away from the etrex line, my buddy had one and the screen was small and simple which made it more difficult to navigate with.

The first one I had used 4 AA batteries and it was a pain in the ass, cough up the extra coin for one that is rechargeable. Its worth it.

Wait- do these things draw a straight line between waypoints, or is it a track exactly where I went? I'm not spending money on some damn thing that doesn't do anymore than a free app.

You should be able to set it so it so it follows you everywhere you go with a little line. I think every GPS does that, but I might be wrong.

Waypoints are just a single location.

Routs are a combination of waypoints you already have put in.

Tracks are a bunch of waypoints that automatically save every so often usually every 10sec or .01 miles. This is what you want. But it doesn't seem to have much storage so if you want to have a lot of these tracks on hand you might want a better unit.

What I do with mine is set it on track when I'm out getting to a spot, then when I get home I mark waypoints on the main parts of the tracks where there are turns or obstacles then I make a route so I can delete the track and save space.

On a hand held you have the ability to turn on/off the track log. Probably the same on an app.

Like this. Takes up a fraction of the space as a track.
This works good on open water where you don't have to follow an exact path. In a tight marsh I save the exact path I take.

This is the sort of place I want it for. The widest parts of the main channel are maybe 25 feet wide, with maybe 10 feet navigable even in the hybrid. I want to be able to get back into some of those guts, which are about 5 feet wide, and there's more than shown on the map, depending on the tide. If I turn in the wrong one, even if I'm only off by 20 feet, I'll be headed to the entirely wrong place at 4 am in the dark. I definitely need one that follows a close track. I won't need to store many, about 3 or 4 I suspect, but just using waypoints won't do me much good.

Any input is appreciated. As long as it doesn't involve $400. In which case, you may go piss up a rope.

Waypoints could be used as an indicator for the turn in...

I think you should get the one Olly has (Megellan explorist 500). You can find them used on ebay for less than $70. Because you're a cheap ass, you'll want to use it for multiple things to get your money's worth.

Look into geocaching. It would be a fun, FREE (less fuel) activity for you and the Bug after you get a GPS unit.

I think that the eTrex will do what you want, but you can get a "better" model for less money, and probably be happier with it because you can do more.

Wife's phone. She has a geocache app, that gives you maps, coords, a list of caches, and tracks your completed ones. Pretty cool, but I think it was a little pricey, maybe $15 or something?

You can join a site for FREE, and load the cords onto the unit you get. Then she can yap on the phone while you follow the route.

Family gets out, wife stays quiet, have some fun...Win-Win!
