Avalanche Overflight

Postby AKPirate » Tue Jan 28, 2014 4:42 pm

This is footage of an avalanche that cut the highway to Valdez Alaska. Still waiting for better conditions before they try to clear it.

That's nuts.
When we were there in December of 09 they were shooting mortars into Thompson Pass so it would avalanche and they could clear it out.

Holy cow.

Forgive my ignorance, but is that a natural mountain stream, or runoff/snow melt?

Alaska is BIG. Texas is small in comparison.
They have a problem in Alaska...it's BIG.
The avalanche, mud slide that flooded that bay needs to be posted up here too.

They have been doing that just outside of Anchorage last week. Not sure if they got to Thompson before this happened. We have been above freezing temps everyday for the last two weeks or so and the snowpack is just crazy weak and this happened.

No ignorance Tman, the Lowe River runs along the highway through that area. They had a huge lake form above the avalanche after it cut the road and river.

Just realized you may have been talking about the small creek coming down off the mountain, yeah, that is above the main river but drops into it.

I want to live there bad.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

Used to live in North Pole. Then the family built a house in Fairbanks. Central Alaska is very nice. I miss it.

Yeah, I was there for that. I was hunting out of a boat with a hard sided blind and we rode that shit out. Got our limits and only lost one diver decoy.

Inland tsunami...it was only ~five years ago I think. Made a lake that was huge.

Yeah plus a mudslide created a dam. Does that sound correct?
Pretty sure it was Lituya Bay.

Lituya Bay was in the 50's. Lots of calving glaciers do what your talking about, some on a larger scale than others.

The one I recall had an iceberg fall in, made huge wave. Wave caused mud slide that created a dam that caught most of the water. Can't find it on YouTube cuz I forget the exact location.
