I've heard stories about rusty coat hangers, never seen it in real life though.

I'm pretty certain it was copper that he used. I don't have a clue how they work and was skeptical at first, but we located the lines with them. Most of his gas wells were drilled in the '70's and 80's and the lines were laid shortly after the wells were completed, so I know he didn't remember the exact spot the line was buried on the miles of pipeline he has. Most of his pipelines aren't straight lines because the trench was dug with a trencher on the tractor and they had to maneuver it through the woods avoiding trees and any other obstacles. The pipe used was 3 inch PVC, so it was flexible enough to bend in the curves.

There is one line that I'll always remember repairing because we spent 2 weekends trying to get to the pipe. We knew he had a leak because the well had a drastic overnight decline in the amount of gas that made it to the point of sale meter. After walking the area that he thought the line was in, we found where the gas was coming to the surface in a small crater that was holding water and was bubbling. We assumed that the pipe was buried directly underneath, so we started digging. After hand digging a hole we could have parked my truck in, we never found the pipe. We re-pressured the line hoping we could hear where the gas was coming from and we did. We dug the rest of the afternoon and most of the next day and still never found it. We both had things going on during the week, so we made plans to come back the following weekend. When we were gathering our supplies that next Saturday morning, he decided to grab his rods this time to see if they would help. We got back to the area we were digging in and he started walking around with the rods. They finally crossed about 15 feet from where we had dug at. Once we started digging again, we were on the pipe in about 30 minutes. Unfortunately, we found the pipe but we still had to dig and follow the pipe until we found where the joint separated and that took the rest of the day. I asked him later why he didn't bring the rods the first time and he said he thought it was going to be buried to deep for them to work. He had hired someone to lay this line for him and they had used a backhoe and had it deeper than normal trencher depth. Had he brought them the first day, we could have been done in about a day instead of the 3 1/2 days it took us in this 90 degree muggy Louisiana heat.

I remember thinking it was bullshit when they showed us how to do it in high school but I was amazed how well it actually worked the few times I've seen it done.

We used to use dowsing rods all the time when I worked at the golf course. Just take two of those little marking flags, pull the flags off, and put a 90 degree bend in for little handles. Sometimes they'd cross, sometimes they'd swing apart, but they do work.

Santa clause teach you that trick?
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

I have seen dowsing rods in use, I have them filed in my head with ghosts, aliens, why a metronomes will sync with each other and all the other things I can't explain with science

I KNOW where a pipeline is. Buried 8' under. I bet I could trick people into thinking I found it with plastic dousing rods. But they have to be made of polycarbonate. :)
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

I've seen an old superintendent try to bullshit people using that trick.... He knew where all the pipes were.
Most courses (all newly built courses) have an as-built. A map of where every head, waterline, quick coupler, and valve is located.

The last course I worked on was built in 1966. We had asbestos pipes and no map. It was retarded if we had a main line break bc we had to wear a hazmat suit to fix it.

Screw that. If the pipe was broke, there was water and mud everywhere. Can't inhale wet asbestos. Safest thing ever.

Speaking of water.

Hopefully, this was the only jinxed part of the day. Things went well. Just getting ready to glue the conduit together, had the wire pulled. I look at the end of the trench by the barn, and the last 6 feet is full of water. What the fuck. I know I didn't break a water line, or even hit one.

Upon further investigation, my wife decided since it was a little warmer, she was going to hose the fucking barn out. Right then and there. Not like it had been done for months, but just HAD to be done right then. So I went in the barn and shut the water off, cussed her a little bit, then went and got a cup to start scooping all the water out, so I could dry the conduit and glue it up. I wasn't pleased.

All in all, though, I was happy that that was the only wheels falling off part of the day.

Did you pull the wire before you glued all the joints, as you went?
