I won't go back to that stinkin kingsford, until I started cooking with lump I didn't realize how much of a nasty chemical smell it gave off in the beginning. Took about 4-5 hours to burn off too. Eating that food is probably comparable to smoking a pack of cigarettes with all the crap in that coal.

I would say yes, and use natural lump coal, it gets hotter faster and burns cleaner with a better flavor.
You cooking the bird in there for thanksgiving?
I'm probably doing two or three of them depending on who wants one. My grandparents want one for the big family shindig and the inlaws want a bone in breast.

I'm going to either deep fry it or may try the infrared no oil jobs. Buddy of mine has one and says it's the shit. Turkey stays moist, tastes good, no oil and other mess to clean up.

BUMP!
uploadfromtaptalk1399139448492.jpg

I found a turkey in my freezer the other day. Doing half in the lime juice marinade and half Simon and Garfunkle style, as per a recipe I found online. Also trying some bacon wrapped onion rings.

We just ate them. Will deffinitely make them again. All they were was red onion, brushed with srirachia, wrapped in bacon and peppered generously. They went fast and I didn't hear any complaints.

My UDS is half way done. I need to find a weber grill top, not as easy as you'd think.

No, it's not. That's why I went with the piece of flat steel and a small smokestack.

Glad to hear it's not that hard to find a used weber grill top in AL from a guy that lives in MD.

I HAVE to use a weber grill lid or something 22.5" around because my drum didn't he a removable top I had to cut it out like a can. I want the Weber one because it gives you a ton more room for stuff and you can locate the grate at the very top.

I didn't have the lid, either. Wish I would've, but the flat steel I cut an inch big, and it works well. Also, I don't think the Weber lids sit over the lip of the drum. I'm almost positive I read that they only sit on top, which doesn't seem like it would make a great seal, either. I figured with that, I may as well make something myself, but if it turns out that they do fit tight (like they would on a grill, overlapping the top) then I may be a little disappointed.

A barrel that comes with a lid you have to make a lip on the inside for the weber.
Apparently a barrel where you have to cut the top out the rolled edge is smaller and the weber lid fits right on.

Olly. Look for one of these. People toss them when the screen rusts out.
The lid is exactly barrel size. Will check.

made it at work after hours. I had roughly 400 welders at my disposal, lol. The barrels my buddy picked up need the top cut but I grabbed a couple lids (we just toss the lids, buy the barrels go back to the suppliers??), took them into the blast booth and gave them a steel shot bath so I didn't have to wire wheel them. Just need hardware and grates and we're good. I can't find the link to the thermostat that was suggested tho, and where are you guys getting the grates from?

Any off brand will work, and they're usually cheaper than the Weber grates. I'll see if I can find the thermostat link. It was on eBay.

Take your UDS craft to the next level with your own lump charcoal.
