I'm going to try bleach tomorrow. The bright side is that my traps are damn near perfect now. Even when the wax starts to wear off next season, they've now been heat-treated with skunk essence. Twice.

The chemist in me says that's not so good an idea.

You know anything about polar and non-polar molecules? (non-polar mixes with non-polar, polar with polar and opposites won't mix) Think oil and water
I'd say you need to try some non-polar solvent first.
Water obviously don't do it and it's polar so try the opposite.

SOAP has properties of both polar and non-polar...that's why it's soap.
Both polar and non-polar molecules are slightly soluble in a soapy solution.

Oil is non-polar...some kind of oil will break up the skunk and dilute it. Then wash the oil away with soap. Bleach will make the plastic parts in your machine get more brittle.

I think I'd try squirting the insides of the machine with baby oil or mineral oil whichever is cheaper.

dump a bunch of tomato juice in it. It probably won't work but you might as well turn the stinky sob red before you throw it in the yard.

If the seal is good on the dishwasher door, you might try running a tablespoon of Woolite through the longest and hottest cycle. Liquid dish detergent would be my second choice. Both Woolite and liquid dish soap make lots of suds so you might want to put a towel down in front of the dishwasher.

Why not clean them in a big pot of water. Outside on a gas stove?

Don't tell AT's wife but a car wash is how I clean my traps. Hang em on a fence to rust a little and then dip em.
AT has to do things the hard way I guess.

Nope, it's the easy way. No idea why, but a dishwasher will rust traps instantly. Two wash cycles and a dry, and the new traps will have a patina of rust on them that's good enough to take dye.

Gaddy, I don't boil them because it doesn't work well. The used traps have dirt and grease and shit that's almost baked on, and boiling never gets it out. Stuff is like concrete. And the new traps come with a greasy coating, and if you boil them in a pot, the water just gets greasy, and they never get clean enough to rust quickly. I guess if you changed the water a few times, it'd work, but that's too much time. A dishwasher does the trick quick and easy.

And none of them stank when I put them in, dammit!

I had some new ones in there too get some rust- this was two washes and a dry. They were new, shiny, and greasy when they went in. Works like a charm- ready for the dye in just one night.

This gives me an idea. He should get a parts washer from harbor freight it would take more time but it would clean the shit out of the traps.

The purpose of getting the traps rusty is so that they'll hold the trap dye or dip them.
If any of y'all had trapped you'd know why you dye them. Ironically ...it keeps them from rusting.

Different guys use different techniques to do a dirt set that may get wet and ice up. Some use salt and that'd eat up unprotected traps. The dye helps protect them from salt and antifreeze.
I never tried it but some guys use special dirt that can't possibly get wet.
What's it called AT? I forget.

I used dye a couple years and then started using the black trap dip stuff in a can that you mix with gasoline and then dip the traps. Gives them a nice thin coat of the stuff, whatever it is.

It's called dry dirt. You basically mix dirt with wax, but it takes forever. I use peat miss instead, and salt the heck out of them, but it does wreak havoc with them.

I use nothing but the cold dip, that you mix with gas. IMO it works better than dye, and is much quicker. I just refer to it as "dye", even though that's probably not technically correct. I'll wax them this weekend, and hang them in the barn, then wax again in October. Then I usually have to rewax around Christmas.

My traps are speed dipped and have been hanging outside for almost 9 months.
I left them outside thinking "maybe I'll buy a license" but since I've let mine expire and can't prove I ever had a license I have to take trapper education classes to get one. FUCK THAT!

I think you can get "siliconized dirt" as well.

Jim, Thanks for the entertaining post  Nothing quite like that funk, and I'm sure you had some funny thoughts going though your head as the stank got worse and worse throughout the house..........like dusting a silent but deadly fart in a crowd.......and knowing you will probably never hear the end of that one :o Might as well take momma to the appliance getting place and let her pick out a new one, cause she is gonna remind you of this event every time you sit down to eat, and in her mind, the dishes won't be clean! Good Luck Brother!!!!

I hope this is as remotely funny there this morning as it still is here. My wife was just making death threats about if her dishwasher ever sees anything close to this.

The theory of medium apply here? Might be a stretch, my memory is foggy on details, but seems like a solid card to play. She hates the smell but trapping is enjoyable for you as well as brings in some extra jingle?
