Rifle/Pistol range ideas

Postby huntfishnv » Wed May 14, 2014 12:14 am

So the place I work has a sporting clays and trap/skeet area that is pretty well done and overall looks really nice. (As it should since these people pay a ton of money to be a member at this place) Anyway, there's this huge slopping hill right next it that would be perfect for a rifle/pistol range. However, someone went about it completely wrong and built two crappy and huge birms, one at 50 and one at 100, but for the 100 you have to shoot across the road. It just doesn't work, it looks crappy, and could be a lot better. Anyone have good ideas for how to make gong stands (steel plate targets), how to make the birms look good, or even general ideas for this?

Who knows if my boss would even be okay with me trying to fix it, but I figure if I come up with a good enough proposal then its worth a try.

All you need is a good dozer, move the berm or move the road or maybe move the firing line to the other side of the road.

Have a dozer so moving berms is the best option, no firing line now just shooting benches that can be easily moved. So that makes that part easy at least.

Do you have a picture of the area? Might be easier to come up with ideas if we could see what you have to work with.

After they move the berm around hide a few propane cylinders just under the surface to kick it up a notch around there. You know, spice it up and keep it a new and interesting experience for all involved.

No! DamnitI completely forgot to get up there and snap some pics of the range! Next weekend threre's a shoot lined up so I'll be on the range for sure.

It could be up to about 600 yards, and I'd say no more than 6 people would be on it at a time, most likely just a couple.

Hold on! Just did a google search for the sporting clays and there is a picture of the makeshift rifle range at around 21 seconds! Take a look!

So you guys are shooting into the banks? I'm assuming thats what the couple of dirt piles are for? Any thing down range that you have to worry about? Is the range locked into being one direction or could you have a rifle range pointing one way and a pistol range at a 90 degree angle to the rife range? Just thinking, most pistol ranges are fairly short (100 yards or less) and rifle ranges are usually longer (100 yards or more).

yeah exactly just shooting into the banks, and so far that pistol/rifle range or whatever you want to call is it, isnt being advertised, but I think it has the potential to turn into something really cool that the ranch could advertise and get more people to shoot at. Its basically the distance of a pistol range except they built benches and shoot rifles on it. Its just not really functional for either. And pretty much that's the only direction you can shoot. To the left is the road coming up there and to the right is the sporting clays course.
