What are everyone's thoughts on having a LinkedIn account? I have been looking for ways to network with peers and colleagues for my transition to the civilian world. When I came across this networking platform, I thought it looked like a great tool to get your name out there.

Start an account, it's free, and a great way to network in your field, especially if looking for a job.

I thought it would be an awesome tool for me, who is pursuing an accounting/financial analyst position once my service with the military is done. Even though what I do in the miltary has nothing to do with accounting or finance.

I have an account, but find it mostly useless, at this point anyway.

Do you get the emails and job offers just because you have an account? or is it because of those who you've networked with putting your name out to employers seeking employees?

It's good if you're looking for a job. Otherwise, it's stupid.

I get calls bout once a week. Structural engineers with experience are in demand but they don't want to pay. It goes like this.

I'm so and so from technical recruiters. Do you have a minute.

Yes. (I always humor them.)

I have a great opportunity with a firm that does X, Y and Z that fits your experience perfectly.

Ok. Where?

Oh, we can't tell you yet. They are a great firm that really needs experienced engineers.

Of course. How much they paying?

Between this and that.

Really, they really need experienced engineers and that's what they're willing to pay?

That's the going rate.

That's why there is a shortage of engineers and why that company won't find a good one. Thanks.

Do you know anyone looking right now?

Nope.

This.

John, they seem to be tailored to your listed qualifications (at least loosely), so it really isn't a bad thing for this sort of deal.

Thanks for the help! I had a promising career in male modeling but I lost all my hair and now have to resort to using my education to provide for my family.

I have a similar experience to Vince. It's worth it for having a network.
