Not gonna lie. I lovem, but only here. I like that if I'm going for mallards I have to sift threw all the other ducks to gettem. Its not just mallards flying around here and a lot of times not that many mallards are moving. It test one personal fortitude when you have gaddys teal wigeon and sprig all up in your business and you're waiting on Mr. Greentop.

When some one shoots a limit of greenheads in say Arkansas or the Midwest somewhere and that's the only species you see. It really doesn't do anything for me. If that's the only duck moving and that's all you can get a crack at then what's the big deal ...... their I said what I've thought for years. I live it and completely agree. We see very few species other than mallards around here.

Hopefully I'll make it to the Mississippi to bag some variety this season.[/quote]

And I'm gonna make that pilgrimage to the south one day to hunt the timber.

Wigeon are fun in the way they fly like a pack of fighter pilots all in unison. We used to get about 3 weeks of straight wigeon, but last year very few. The previous year we were getting limits, but it was reallyy tough to tell hens from drakes, even in hand! Plumage was just identical. Another bird I really like the way they fly is when a little flock of 5 or 6 spoonies roars in. The wings cutting air are just a way cool sound!

Seriously. With the exception of a handful of woodies, 2 gadwall, and a few teal, I didn't see anything other than mallards and geese in my normal area this season.

I've got to make it down there with you!

God bless a mallard, no bird is stupider over a call. Make a fellow look like he knows what he's doing.

Not nearly as many still make it this far south as once did, but they're usually first or second in my little pothole blind's bag by virtue of being the most easily influenced things to pass within earshot.

Except that fewer are passing. From 1996-2000 Louisiana wintered 29% of the Mississippi flyway's mallards and by 2006-2010 we were down to 11%, most of which stay on the northern end of the state and never see the coastal marsh I hunt. And last season my blind's mallard numbers were less than half what they'd been the two previous seasons. If that doesn't prove an anomaly next Fall, I may very well greet the 2015-2016 season from a ricefield specklebelly blind - not that they aren't short-stopping, too, with their numbers dropping from 80% to 46% during the above survey periods.

They are fun. As the season progresses our local mallards get extremely educated. You can easily tell what are new birds by their body language when they first hear the call. Local birds can take forever to finally drop in. Makes it a good time though when you finally fool them.

Thats strange we are seeing more and more specs migrating into the valley every year. Talks of bumping the limit from 6 to 8.

Mallards are holding up north of us nowadays. We still get some that migrate down with the occasionally big push of them here and there along with a decent local population. Seems like if you want to kill them around here the habit has to be exactly right for them.

Do you guys realize what you have done here?

I mean seriously, it's almost disgusting.

You've put an actual duck hunting related topic up, and discussed it. I'm ashamed.

Things have been changing for quite a while. The camp I work for is decorated with photos from when the owner's father-in-law had a club there in the 1940s and '50s, and the geese in those photos are all "ringnecks," big-assed Canadas that are only seen in parks here now. Specklebellies hadn't yet moved into Louisiana in huntable numbers and blues and snows didn't know about rice and were still staying deep in the brackish coastal marsh and living on three-corner grass and such. By the time I moved here in the '80s, the Klondike VFD building was considered the statistical center of the greatest concentration of specks in the nation - and sure as heck seemed it. And huge bodies of blues were all over the countryside busy making rice stubble fields look plowed and harrowed. Now, well, things have changed. But it's still a great place to be a waterfowler.

Thinking on those "good old days," Hudson would have loved the morning I carried four guys looking for mounting birds and we shot 14 drake wigeons before having their four perfect footballs with clean masks and caps and nice sprigs. Can't even begin to image killing 14 wigeon in a week now, let alone drakes. Shot 8 all last season and 34 in the best of the past seven seasons, 2008-09. They were the first of our ducks to find other wintering grounds but apparently not the last...
