How many typically get released per nest and can I get a few released to me?

The release target is 12% at 4', so there's a scale running from approximately 14% at 3' to approximately 10% at 5'. A crew from LDWF goes to the farm, tags, scoot codes and measures each one to insure it's within the slot and runs the measurements through their formula on a computer to determine the appropriate number of releases needed to mitigate what's been taken from an area.

"Per nest" varies depending on how many fertile eggs we'll get from one, which probably averages around 30. (We'll only pick, and pay the landowner for the fertile eggs.) Some have nothing fertile, only a few will be in others, and since alligators have two uteruses, it's not uncommon for only half of a nest to be good. On the other end of the scale, we've picked a few nest that had right at 50 good eggs.

All of the releases have to be released where the eggs they're mitigating were taken, so, no, you can't have any for the pot. Sorry. Wouldn't bother me any if they were all released to a sauce piquant pot, as they've gone from supposedly endangered before my time here to pain in the ass in recent years.

Once the water temp drops below about 60* the gators stop swimming around. I don't let my dog retrieve during early season but I didn't see a single one during regular season over here in AL.

Once the water temp drops below about 60* the gators stop swimming around. I don't let my dog retrieve during early season but I didn't see a single one during regular season over here in AL.

A few years back alligator prices slipped so far that folks quit fishing them, and three guys I know lost dogs during the September teal season in places they'd used dogs without incident for 20 or more years. But I follow the rule of thumb Olly referenced and won't put my dog in swimming water big gators would feel safe in until the water temp in in the low 60s, which generally covers our regular duck season that starts in November. We'll still see them out and about, particularly sunning, on nice Winter days, but the low water temperatures slow their metabolisms below wanting to eat.

wild fires is something that is in the back of my mind at new home. my folks have vacation house closer to CoLoSprings and dad spent about half the summer out on the dozzer in case it got any nearer.
hope they get that one under control fast

are you shed hunting with them too?
i worked with a blue tic pup for sheds and morels. didnt pan out as well as planned. wanted to run fur so it made its way in with the other coon hounds

no my good buddy collects sheds. Has a mountain of em in his backyard. He's occasionally brings em over as chew toys for Cadee and Charlie

ya know Charlie's always had that sad puppy dog look. He's one of the mellowest dogs I've ever been around
