Actually, that isn't true at all. The Bill of Rights was not intended to apply to the states. The Constitution is only a governing document for the FEDERAL government. You should read it "shall not be infringed BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT". It only applies to them, and until around 1870, the Bill of Rights did not apply to the states. The "passage" of the 14th amendment is what really let the feds into everything.....

Interesting. So prior to1870 a state could legally deprive its citizens of the freedom of speech, press, religion, etc. with no fear of recourse coming down from the federal level?

I probably would have been a better student and may have even went to college (I pissed away a prime opportunity for a scholarship to cal poly ) had they allowed me to kick my feet up and tip a few cold ones while we exchanged ideas.

I did that in a college chem class. I'm not a very auditory person anyway when it comes to learning from people speaking. I get distracted far too easily. Way cool prof., though! A couple of times we went out for beers between classes! He married a French woman, and took her last name! Go figure!
