Totally remarkable!

Postby QH's Paw » Mon Jul 07, 2014 12:47 pm

I have often heard the trashing of state employees, specifically DMV employees. So, I thought I'd post what happened to me this morning, at the Oregon DMV in St. Helens Oregon. You won't believe it.
I walked in to the DMV at about 8:10am. This put me at the end of the line(#17 pull tab). What I had with me was a hand written bill of sale and a title that was signed over to my daughter in November, for a horse trailer licensed in California. In Oregon, out of state title transfer requires inspection of the VIN. So, I had the horse trailer with me, to be inspected. I have to admit, besides the paperwork, I honestly expected trouble with this inspection. The only readable numbers on the trailer were the manufacturer's plate, which I knew already did not match the VIN exactly.
Well, they got to my number and the lady behind the counter made quick work of the paperwork, WOW! No interrogation to any degree.
Now, the long walk to the trailer for the inspection. I'm not sweating but, it's going so smoothly to this point I can't help but think it's about to unravel. She says they don't match and then adds, "I'll make a tag that has the whole number for law enforcement purposes". Basically, using common sense and here experience and background, she realizes the data plate was removed when the trailer was painted at some point. She also realizes the tongue stamp from the Manufacturer is what the final VIN is based or derived from(partially).
We walk back in to the building and she gives me the new plates, tags, takes my money and then follows me out and puts the new VIN tag on the trailer. You won't believe what happened next. She smiled at me and told me to have a nice day. The audacity of her.
I chalk it up to being at a rural DMV but, it might have been my shining personality. :D
So, anyone else have a "good" story.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I drove off with all needed paperwork, plates, tags and newly attached VIN tag at 08:35am.
How's that for service.

I've generally had pretty good service from DMV employees. It's the rather diverse cross-section of society on my side of the counter that serves up frustrations, and I can only imagine what a day's worth of them would do to my attitude. Go back at 4pm and then see what she thinks of your shining personality!

I have never once has a problem from any DMV in the 4 states I have registered cars in. GA, TX, MI, AL. I really think that all the problems from the DMV come from the amount of people there and the fact that most of them are retarded gooch bags who do not show up with the most basic of the required paperwork. Show up prepared and with a smile and you'll be in and out in no time.

No thanks.
I can say, at this point, I haven't had a bad experience at that particular DMV. I can't say the same for Portland but, I was younger than too.

I would say at most DMVs that's probably true. Not all though.

Everytime I go in I see some real drty trashy person who looks like they just rolled out of bed fighting with one of the ladies behind the glass. Mean while I roll in with everything I need and am done in 20 minutes. I've registered 4 trucks in AL in the last year and a boat. All super simple just have to be prepared.

Being a rural DMV has a lot to do with it I think. Never had a problem at Stayton DMV a town of around 4,000 (at least when I was going there.) But the Salem DMV... Whole other story.

Ours has a kiosk outside, open 24/7. You can do anything besides pay fines at it. Don't even need to go inside and sit amongst all the Typhoid Mary mexicans waiting to get their license. Show up, enter my VIN number, put in some cash, out pops tags.

If a machine can replace you at your job, you don't have a good job to begin with.

I look at the DMV much the same as a home plumbing job. Figure at least four trips to the hardware store.

Seen a dude freak out last time I was there bc he didn't have anything but an expired Florida ID card and wanted a Georgia drivers license. I show up over prepared every time I go. Last time I had SS card, birth certificate, passport, license, two bills for my new address, auto insurance card, and a pay stub.

They actually use a stool sample here in Georgia but a container provided at the time of service so you give that there.
