Prices here are good too , but with very little hay most ranchers have sold off to the Texas buyers , just like back a
couple years ago when we purchased a lot of their cattle .
Food on the other hand is going way up as the row-crop farmers had no / very little water this year . Time will tell
if this winter brings farming or ranching back to this area......so far ,it doesn't look so good !

Anyway , soon there will be birds to kill ? and , oh yea Rabbits !

Registered Holstein steers...lol

Real good $$$ when you consider they were fed push-out/waste from the dairy so feed cost is essentially $0

We do similar. Top 1/3 gets sexed Holstein semen for replacements, middle 1/3 gets standard Holstein semen and the bottom 1/3 gets angus sperm.
The crosses get sold as stockers, I keep a couple hundred of the Holsteins to feed push-out, the rest get sold as deacons

We kill a couple a year. Hands down, Angus makes better steak - but I'll take a Holstein for burger every time

We're lucky here on the eastern shore. Fresh local tuna, mahi mahi, sea bass, flounder, clams, oysters, crabs, lobsters, waterfowl, venison etc.
Don't usually buy a lot of meat from the supermarket.

Pretty much the diet I would prefer. Beef has never done much for me. Once in a while a barbecued hamburger is tasty, but a big steak.....I can eat it, but no desire really. Venison and elk is great, but in CA they are on the Endangered Species list.

With all of us hunters here in Calif on the endangered list I eat as much good beef as anyone . This meat is not from
Dairy animals ether , as I prefer grass / pasture fed along with some grain to make them taste good . Keeping the freezer
full has been a little harder to do with these prices , as with not much hay for sale ( within reason ) you just send them down
the road to market . I went by kettlemen City ( stock yard ) a week ago , it was so full , the animals there couldn't lick their
butts...........Most ranchers are selling these days of no water !

I've always enjoyed Harris Ranch beef.

That's right Boot , glad you understand !

Like on this forum , we are covered with Nuts...Trees up and down the state are pushing cattle out , it doesn't matter
if you're in the Dairy business or raising beef cattle , feed it out'ta reach with only little irrigated land to be had . Yep ,
food prices will be high and I don't see how it can come back down as more and more good row crop ground is being planted
in trees .

Plus , there's no water for row crops !
