Cool finds?

Postby Duckdog » Fri Aug 15, 2014 3:31 pm

I found these petrified bones last week down on the river. I have no idea what they're from, but they're definitely old!
Kinda neat...

Damn that's really cool... Doesn't it take thousands of years to petrify something?

yes it does Flint. Very cool find! take it to a lab and see if they can figure out what it is!

ETA: the bone on the left looks to be a mammalian sacral vertebra to me.

I took another pic to help with size reference...
Image

I have no idea about the sizes of various mammoth/mastodon bones, but that wouldn't be too uncommon for the area.
I know a guy who found an entire intact tusk down there. Now THAT is cool!
He got big money for it from a local museum too!
I did get to see a big mammoth vertebrae once and it was almost the size of a 1 pound coffee can.

Possibly a mammoth, quite a few bones have been found along the river. I know a guy who also found a mastodon skull along the Wakarusa. Lots of cool shit can turn up on the river.

I shit you not, I posted the above quote this morning, and this afternoon I found this while out working the dog on the beach here. No idea what it was, but definitely petrified bone.

Sandy bank of the Columbia River. I have access to about 1.5 miles of it out my back door.

Just renting on a narrow 1 acre waterfront piece, but it gives me walk-in access to the aforementioned beach that would otherwise only be reachable by boat. It's great for running/swimming the dog and I've been turning up a few arrowheads, lately.
