Season logs?

Postby Rick » Wed Aug 20, 2014 11:38 am

Lots of stuff concerning preseason preparations scattered around the site these days that has me thinking about the benefits of adding a section for season logs to the board, which would keep it half way organized and easy to find for those of us hoping to learn from others. Or just enjoy their adventures vicariously.

Such a section was mighty popular at another board I frequented until incredibly inept site hosting killed the site off with months of down time. Each participant's log was set up as a separate sub forum organized at its host's discretion, and prior to each new season, the previous season's logs were archived for future reference. I'd divide mine into separate "Preseason," "Season Log" and "Species Log" threads, which made it relatively easy to later use as reference. I also used a set format for the Season Log, but others preferred a more narrative approach. All threads were interactive, but at least on that forum, folks used, rather than abused, that feature.

Any interest?

Rick I know we've discussed this before and the reason I haven't done something like this is I didn't know if there would be a lot of interest in it. If enough people speak up here and want to have a season log section. I will make it happen. Let me know guys

Will Rick be the only one who has one? Will you guys take up the task of keeping up with the logs? That was my main worry. I know rick is up to the task but it'd be cool to see everyone keep up to date logs too.

I'd keep one for sure. I've done a half assed job with it on my own but it gets boring on an excel sheet. Would be a good way to keep all my pictures straight with the hunt as well.

Alright I will set it up this evening in a format close tohat Rick was describing.

I hope the heck not. Really want to see what others are doing. Hell, I once even saw a good idea from California, so you never know where you might learn something.

Things that we do in Michigan are not applicable anywhere else, on account of how extreme it is here.

You might be right. Once hunted Saginaw Bay from a house boat decorated as a Christmas tree.

I think as long as you don't make a log dedicated for DuckHammer's hunts it will be very cool to read. You might however have to give him a separate forum so he can tell us which duck call he played with that day.

As long as "duck call" means duck call.

If you'd seen Rick's log before you'd know you won't be alone. That's exactly what we are looking for with this. Makes for a great escape from work or reality as it is when you can't make it to the blind.

Fwiw as illustration of just one approach, this is the format I've been using for the log portion:

Right up front (where it's easy to copy), here is the template I will be using":

Date:

Time:

Location:

Cloud Cover:

Wind Direction and Velocity:

Temperature:

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes:

Waterfowl Activity:

Waterfowl Responsiveness:

Hunters:

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s):

Special Equipment:

Kudos:

Curses:

Birds By Species:

Photo Ops:

My "preseason" is a collection of dated scouting and preparation narratives, often with illustration, and the "species log" is just that broken down into splits.

Can't speak for others, but know I sucked at log keeping before making a public commitment to it and believe most who try it will be glad they did.

That going more in to it then what I do, but I could do something like that after a hunt .

I'm definitely down to participate.
Thanks for the format rick.
I had been planning on starting a notebook this year and keeping a log for every season here on out. I'll have no problem transferring it here.

It was just a suggestion. Hunting every morning and most afternoons, I'm often so fried that it's easier for me to fill in the blanks than compose something coherent. And sometimes I leave blanks blank. Other times I get pretty detailed.

(Being a spy, I naturally hope others will take the detailed course.)

I use an app from DU with a similar format. It would be interesting to see it here.

I only hunt the mornings .I am almost always home by noon or before . I will scout in the afternoon but not hunt .I find we do better that way , but that's just me .
we don't have much hunting pressure around here .so I try not to beat them up to bad .

I'm in the same mostly duck marsh blind, with a 9:30 curfew, every morning and then usually taking folks for ag land geese in the afternoons, so midday is my goose scouting time. Often don't look at the log until my "quiet time" before heading to the camp the next morning.

I'd give it a go, or at least try. Have started many times, but rarely finished the season. Is nice to look back at some hunts.

That was me. Never made it a full season before making the public commitment. Think you'll be glad you did.

Several others out there I'd particularly like to see on board...
