Last weekend

Postby blockmaker » Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:56 pm

Last 3 days are here. Kinda glad to see it go. We had the worst year in several years. Really dread picking up 1200 decoys and getting everything put away. But I already can't wait till next year!

Our last weekend is upon us as well leaving me torn. Plan was to hit my farm but rain today has ruled out that option. Seeing the first viable window in the sea forecast has us itching to drop some hooks, but just seems wrong....

Same here, bittersweet! We've had a decent season, but our bird numbers are nothing compared to some of you that consistently hammer them. If we get 4-5 solid limit hunts a season, it is salve on the wounds from the days we hunt hard and only kill a few. Have had to work hard, scout hard, and think out of the box for some of our successes, and each year, they get harder and harder to come by, but a heavy strap of quality birds makes it all worth while. Like Flight, I'm ready to make the last two days of the season this weekend, and then start dropping some hooks in the water. We'll gang up once or twice in Feb for a walk in the marsh jumping Snipe, and then it is game on for the fish every weekend.

Don't know that I've ever worked harder for fewer birds than this year. Last two weeks, almost impossible to get ducks to finish.

This will be our last weekend of ducks. Can't say I'm ready to quit, but the coyote sure seems to be. 'Course, he's been working a hell of a lot harder than I have.

I think my dog has actually gained weight this season and I know that's a first. He's usually wore pretty thin. Too many treats from the clients and not enough retrieves.

About my only driving factor to get back out in the morning is to give the dog a few more birds, hopefully. Then it's strait south to drop the big boat in the salt.

Well, I hit what I was after this morning in giving the dog one last decent hunt. River was moving strong after recent rains and shooting divers didn't help him either. Although he wanted them bad today making a couple 100 yards retrieves as the current took the birds down. In the past he hadn't quite figured diving cripples out yet but stayed hard after a broke wing bill as the current swept him past us and snatched it up like an old pro. I didn't care if I even shouldered my gun today and he definitely did me proud.

Best quit on that one, so you can brag him up all off season before the inevitable screw-up that's coming.

Hard to believe our last morning of ducks is here already. No way to take enough of it in to last until September, but I'll be trying...
