Getting ready for our big annual Snipe hunt this year, and always get a small contingent prior to, and hit some areas that we do not cover on the big hunt. Met a few friends at the launch (4 boats/8 people total) around 8:30 a.m. yesterday. Beautiful day to be in the delta, blue skies and sunshine, with overnight lows in the 40's, and daytime high pushing 70. Hit several areas, making man-drives through the marsh, and had a ball shooting at the little speedsters. Burned a half a tank of gas, running from place to place, and some areas were large enough to make multiple drives. Called the hunt around 2:30 so that we could make it back home and have a little Sunday evening relax before getting back to the workweek grind. Tallied up the birds and were only 4 birds shy of an 8-man limit (44 birds total). Most hunters do not, or will not, take the time to hunt these birds, but with a little effort and organization, it can be a great way to wind down the hunting season, and make you realize that you aren't unflappable when it comes to wing-shooting
. Unsure what greeted others when they made it home, tired and hungry, but I arrived to find my woman had cooked a big pot of homemade chicken and dumplings, loaded with plenty of chicken thighs and sliced boiled eggs.........dammit man, almost made myself sick
