It would be funny if it were true.

WW1 Here is the USCGC Tampa which was torpedoed by a German U-boat while escorting troops across the Atlantic. All hands were lost.

Image

WW2 - The image below is a very famous one, marines getting ready to be the first wave of men landing on the beach at Normandy. I wonder who is driving that Higgins boat? Coastguard's Men piloted Higgin'b Boats during WW2 as well as all other manor of small boat because the Navy didn't know how.

Image

Also WW2 - Let's met Douglas Monruo and his Story...

Image

Medal of Honor Citation wrote:"For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action above and beyond the call of duty as Officer-in-Charge of a group of Higgins boats, engaged in the evacuation of a Battalion of Marines trapped by enemy Japanese forces at Point Cruz, Guadalcanal, on September 27, 1942. After making preliminary plans for the evacuation of nearly 500 beleaguered Marines, Munro, under constant risk of his life, daringly led five of his small craft toward the shore. As he closed the beach, he signaled the others to land, and then in order to draw the enemy's fire and protect the heavily loaded boats, he valiantly placed his craft with its two small guns as a shield between the beachhead and the Japanese. When the perilous task of evacuation was nearly completed, Munro was killed by enemy fire, but his crew, two of whom were wounded, carried on until the last boat had loaded and cleared the beach. By his outstanding leadership, expert planning, and dauntless devotion to duty, he and his courageous comrades undoubtedly saved the lives of many who otherwise would have perished. He gallantly gave up his life in defense of his country."

Post WW2 the Coast Guard did what it does best while in combat zones. We did post security for naval bases in combat zones.

Korean War -

Image

USCGC Durant Who's home port was in south Korea along with 5 other cutters. Their mission was to make sure our naval ships and our allies naval ships could safely navigate Korean waters un assaulted. Basically doing body guard work for the Navy...

Vietnam War -

This time the CG got to get a little more into things. During the Vietnam War the Navy was having a hard time navigateing the huge river system the jungles of Vietnam had. So they called in CG personal to once again drive their small boats with naval/marines on-board.

Also the CG used our point class cutters to patrol the seas around Vietnam and intercept and stop Vietcong forces on the water.

Image

Right now as we speak the USCG is providing port security protection for American bases in the Kingdom of Bahrain, we are also the port security of GITMO.

Image

Like I said this post would have been a lot funnier if it were true.

It also would have been funnier if you were a regular poster and it hadn't been almost a year since your last post

Haha been studying that EPME manual for E6! I'm fresh on my CG history.

In all fairness, those Higgins boats always got stuck on the reefs, so I dunno if I'd go so far as to say the CG new how to drive them :P

And Mo barely posted more than once a year anyways, lol

I never heard that. So I can't comment on it.

And I meant it would have been funnier coming from a regular member and not just someone looking to start something.

A lot of people give the CG shit but ALL of those people are civilians who have zero clue or junior members of another branch that are still drinking the Kool- aid from basic. There's a reason why we have more prior service members in the CG than any other branch

The rescue swimmers are some badass sobs. Those coasties have my respect. Isn't there some kind of subset that is the special forces of the coast guard? I remember you saying something about it once. The snipers are badass too.

We have a new group called the DOG. Stands for Deployable Operations Group. Honestly tI don't know too much about them and I know one guy who got accepted into the program and he dropped off the face of the earth. Those are the guys that do the counter-terrorism and force protection shit.

The fact is that the CG is the smallest branch. Only 35K people in the Coast Guard and people that have no clue try to compare us to the Army which has 500k active duty members. We aren't the Army, Marines whatever and never will be. The CG fills a very specific niche roll in the American Military and we do it very well and have for 225 years.

Every single branch has it's own form of bad-ass. While some might think the CG isn't as tough as a Marine or Army SF guy. I've met some of those guys that have said "fuck that" to riding a 47ft motor life boat right into an oncoming hurricane... It's all relative.

On the 110 I was on we took 3 Navy seals out to blow up a 1/2 sunk boat in a shipping channel. It was 6-7 ft swells not bad not great. They got sicker than hell, It was great watching my Chief and Bm1 eating sardines while they threw up over the side. The bridge on a 110 is 20 some ft above the water line you know its going to be a long day when you look up and see water

Tons of respect for coast guard. I'm right at the confluence of the ohio and Mississippi rivers, and I fish a lot on kentucky and Barkley lake, a mammoth of a man made reservoir. I like having them around. Lost three teenagers a couple years ago on ky lake during duck season. Took the coast guard and their divers to locate the bodies that were hung under a ledge of main river channel. I saw the look on those poor kids parents at the diver that pulled them out. Upmost respect and appreciation .

The GC history is interesting to me, as you might guess there is not a huge presence here.

I loved reading about the acts of courage in the citation you listed.

I thought it was funny too. Just like to inform the uninformed. Happens all the time because we are so small 99% of military people from other branches really know nothing about the CG. I didn't even know it existed before I started thinking about joining the military.
