Changes to the duck stamp

I was reading a news paper this morning and found an article about the duck stamp. It seems that they are considering changing it to allow birds of all species to appear on it instead of just waterfowl. Reason behind this is they are trying to expand the people buying it from just waterfowlers to bird watchers and enthusiasts. Apparently caused quite an uproar when it was open to public comment. There are three possible routes they are looking at. Keeping it as is, opening to all birds, or make both waterfowl and some other species present in the background. Seems stupid to change it since it's sole purpose is a tax on waterfowl hunting to help with wetlands.

Nice. I'll try and get back on topic now. They have a plan and what we waterfowlers think is not an issue to the agenda.
I mean...how are they going to sell duck stamps after they eliminate gun and ammo manufacturers next winter?

I think they need to leave the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp as is. I think they should also add a Migratory Bird Conservation Stamp which does all the same thing except act as your federal hunting license and for that stamp put other migratory waterfowl that benefit directly from the national refuge system, but are not ducks or geese.

They tell them what bird to paint for the year anyways, it's not just open game and they pick their favorite. I don't hardly look at the stamp anyways, and I slap my herbie Hancock across it so it is no matter to me if it's a shoveler or a grebe

That's my thoughts as well. I mean it's a duck stamp. That's what it was made for why change it? If they really wanted to do something for birds they could make a stamp for bird watchers to get into federal parks. Somewhere I saw that a duck stamp is like a season pass to federal wildlife refuges. They could do the same thing but make one specifically for that purpose. I don't know. The real reason people are mad from what I gather as they see this as a way for the government to make more money and is messing with tradition.

*I may be wrong about that park pass thing. Don't remember where I saw that but it was several years back.

I think the stamps should show ducks from around the world. Personally I get sick of seeing mallards, and Canada geese and Can's. When was the last time they spotlighted the Shoveler or Black duck? I think it would be great to show a Roseybill, or Brazilian Teal, after all they are ducks aren't they? But what the hell do I know.......don't answer that.

Why not? I think it'd be cool and could further someone knowledge about ducks in general.

How about because choosing a foreign bird would likely knock the pins from under stamp print sales, as well as making the marketing art that didn't win just that much harder?

Interesting. They picked the safest bet on the deal but I bet the artists are pissed. The panel you submit is really small. 8x10 I think is what I read.
