The penny stove

Postby aunt betty » Wed Nov 30, 2016 3:53 pm

Somehow stumbled onto some prepper youtubes. One got me interested in this little device. Easy enough to make one. Runs on alcohol. Runs for around 15 minutes on a fill and it barely takes a quarter-cup.
I think it's pretty slick and could come in handy for cooking a quick egg or something maybe.
Make instant coffee for one. I dunno but check it out.

Burns a lot longer than I thought. Re-filled and re-lit at 3:36 and now it's 4:16 and it's still going. That's 40 minutes. Amazing.

They are slick. You nest two cans bottoms. First you cut some fiberglass insulation and put it in the bottom. Make it so it's standing on edge. Wicks better or something. You're supposed to use JB Weld to join the top to the bottom but I just slid mine together. It's fine.
You have to drill a hole in the center of the top. It's sort of a relief valve and that's where the penny goes. Used a 5/16" drill.
Next I poked 7 holes with a push pin. Someone else tried a lot of configs and it's best to use 7 holes on the inside of the rim of the top.

Helps to overfill on purpose and let the excess burn off when you light it. This heats up the cans and gets the fuel vaporizing.
Whoever thought these things up is one clever monkey.

I timed mine again and it burned for 70 minutes before it went out. At an hour is was going pretty strong still.

Now I have to build a pot stand out of wire.
