Carded for buying coleman fuel?!?!?

Postby aunt betty » Fri Dec 02, 2016 10:52 am

This time of year I'm shopping for shotgun shells, coleman fuel, denatured alcohol, and all the other little things like two-cycle oil and fuel stabilizer. Those little things that suck ass to have to go get in the middle of duck season in Arkansas because everywhere is far away and who knows who has what. That boy scout in me...be prepared.

Today went to the cheapest place to buy these things around here. Picked up two gallons of coleman fuel and a couple gallons of denatured alcohol. (heat sources)

I'm not sure why but when them cans of coleman fuel went by all of a sudden I'm being asked for a state ID. WTF?!?!?!?
I think I know why but I didn't want to say what coleman fuel gets used for besides my lantern, stove, and heater.
Questioned the nice lady with make-up caked on thick if she knew. She said "machine told me to".
Of course I had to ask her if that device were to tell you to jump off the roof of the building would she do it.
Was tempted to make my phone jingle and then announce "you're not going to believe what my phone just told me to do about this". lol

Still think it's fucked up that I had to show ID over some lantern fuel.
Then the brown pen comes out. You know because I might be attempting to purchase my "illicit" fuels with counterfeit currency. oh boy no wonder I dislike going shopping.

Seriously, Coleman fuel? What is this country coming to? I guess if you were buying 10 tons of fertilizer, and blasting caps I might see the need for carding someone but this? Come on......................

The only thing I can come up with is that it's used to to "cook" and I mean that it's used to produce some sort of drug.
Here is close enough to Indiana if you know what I mean. 40 minute drive and you're in the meth state.
Hate to say it but that's why they want to know who is buying it.

When I was 16 if I had gotten my hands on some Coleman fuel cylinders I probly woulda tried to blow them up.
Actually we almost fucking made a tater gun that ran off them. Had everything we needed except a regulator. It was a complicate matter this regulator bc it had to be exactly right or else BOOM. 16 years old blowing themselves up with a can of compressed flammable gas. Maybe they shouldn't sell it to them.

The best way to heat a tent is with one of them old-school coleman catalytic heaters.
Tried propane which is fine until it gets COLD. Propane produces water vapor when you burn it. Makes it literally rain inside the tent if you try and have heat when it's in the teens or cooler. Learned the hard way and that's why I keep telling people every chance I get. The buddy heaters are nice but not in a camper or a tent.

Why's that?

Propane + oxygen goes to carbon dioxide, water vapors, and heat.

C3H8+ 5 O2 -----> 3 CO2 + 4 H2O (+heat)
It's chemistry.
Those 4 H2O end up on the side of the tent or camper. (condensation)
Even with the door zipper open a little and a window unzipped a little to let in some fresh air does not prevent the water from condensing on a really cold tent. It can get really wet if it's single-digit or teens and you're cranking the heat.

Tiz if it's above freezing it's fine to use propane heat in a tent or camper but once it gets cold cold you get wetter the more you heat until it's dripping inside like it's raining outside. Sick but if you tried my early attempts at toughing it out in sub-freezing using the Mr Heater on high power you'd have took off and got a room.

Was using that 9x13 tent. Too big but it's nice to stand up.
Had cold zones and they got wet bad. Downsized to smaller pup tent and started using alcohol and the coleman catalytic heater in combination. For extreme cold I got a larger version of the coleman heater. The difference is great and no more mopping up condensation with a towel for me.
The propane heater is for the boat only now.

I'm getting one of these.

If I don't feel like cutting wood it runs on diesel. Heck I may even buy one of them tents from Davis Tent in Colorado. They got some really nice stuff.

Got to protect us from outrselves these days.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

It's not about safety. It's about that nasty nasty drug. Have no intentions of manufacturing but I'm on their list of suspects now.
