Growing up in Connecticut I would be lucky if I saw that many puddle ducks in an entire season. Unless of course I went to the local park. Pretty good northwest wind today I’m guessing more doves and teal will be bugging out for warmer climates.

Duck Brood Numbers Up Following Drought Year

State Game and Fish Department migratory bird biologists expect a fall flight of ducks from North Dakota similar to 2007, 2008 and 2017.

To bring that forecast closer to home, the fall flight is anticipated to be about 26% above last year’s fall flight, based on observations from the Department’s annual mid-July duck production survey.

According to Mike Szymanski, Department migratory game bird management supervisor, the Department’s 75th annual breeding duck survey conducted in May showed an index of 3.4 million ducks in the state. This year’s breeding duck index was the 23rd highest in the 75 years of the survey, up 16% from last year, and 38% above the long-term average.

The number of broods observed during the Department’s July brood survey was up 36% from 2021, and 5% above the 1965-2021 average index. The average brood size was 7.2 ducklings, up 11% from 2021. The long-term average is 7.0 ducklings per brood.

“Production appeared to be very late this year with many nests hatching throughout all of July and into August,” Szymanski said.

Following severe drought of 2021, wetland conditions across the state varied from good to excellent in May. Szymanski said the wetland index skyrocketed 616%, marking the largest single-year percentage increase on record.

Even so, he warned in early September that it was getting dry on the landscape.

“Wetland habitat conditions in the state have dried up substantially from a very wet spring and continued to dry through August,” Szymanski said. “Our September wetland survey will shed some light on just how much we’ve dried up.”

Game and Fish biologists will conduct a separate survey in mid-September to assess wetland conditions heading into the waterfowl hunting season.

Well I gave dove hunting a whirl tonight. Between driving to the spot, walking out to where I was going to hunt and the actual Hunting I’m guessing it took me about an hour to get my 15 birds. Did surprisingly well shooting getting a couple doubles! Guessing it’s just beginners luck! Had a 12 to 15 mph wind and it was 66° out. Hope to get a couple of the kids out shooting tomorrow! I don’t think Reaper really liked the doves. He was acting pretty goofy jumping all around them and scratching at the ground at them. Then he would pick them up for a little bit and then drop them and then he would do his dance again.

Well I don’t know whenever I go to post a picture and the original is bigger than five megs it says the file is too big so then I choose the next size which is smaller and then it always puts the picture sideways. I figured I would be smart and save the picture on my phone sideways thinking that it will turn it again when I post it making it look right but it never does work. Oh well if anybody has a solution otherwise you’ll be looking at a lot of sideways pictures from me Unless they allow bigger files to be uploaded ha ha

Thanks! It was a lot of fun and now I am kicking myself for never really pursuing doves before. I think I’ve gone maybe four times before but pretty half hearted effort doing it.

We ended up with 35 doves tonight. I have course got my 15, Vinny Quack got her self 12 and Big D Dominic P shot eight. They both easily could’ve shot their limit but it was their first time so was very happy that they got their first doves!

Malfunctions: The only malfunction was my bad shooting and having a hard time locating empty hulls in the tall grass.

Dog(s): The one and only Reaper. I Don’t believe he broke at all tonight. This is only his third Dove hunt. He found all the dead birds that landed in the tall grass. To be honest I was totally amazed and I really could not be happier with him! He still does not like picking up the doves that have wings flapping. He jumps and dances all around them and claws at the ground. If they are dead he picks them right up and brings them to me or at least most of the way to me.

Special Equipment: my homemade dove decoy stand. It’s special, really special!

Curses: I don’t believe in curses

Kudos: Once again Reaper. I would not have found several birds if it wasn’t for him.

Lagniappe: not even the slightest clue to what this word means!

As a sidenote I can tell you with the upmost certainty that if you are out dove hunting or any other species for that matter, if nothing is comein that’s all you have to do is look at YouTube videos on your phone and they will sneak in. This hunt should’ve lasted me less than an hour but between my bad shooting and my lack of paying attention it took a little longer. We typically don’t have this many doves around this time of year. Also I cannot believe I’ve been such a dumbass all these years not hunting these birds. My wife made a gumbo which I guarantee was not as good as the gumbo you guys make as majority of the ingredients came from a box. Tonight she made a barley soup with the doves. You know the soup is good when your kids want it for their bedtime snack! Not sure what I will make with these I shot tonight.
