Migration

Well, we are in the middle of our first winter storm warning. We did get some snow the other day, but majority of it melted pretty quickly. With this one they are saying we could get up to 10 inches but it’s not looking that way right now. Wind is blowing about 25 to 30 mph. Northwest winds, visibility is less than a mile, it’s dark outside, the kids are outside playing in the snow, and they keep on running in the house, telling me about all the snow geese that are flying over heading south.

Still a ton of birds up in Canada from what I hear. Even cranes which is hard to believe. We still don’t have much for ducks, and our Honker population is finally starting to build.

Still have a few days for Vincenzia to connect with a buck. Haven’t been really putting a lot of effort into it because it’s been warm but we are cooling off quickly and the bucks are finally chasing does around.

Here is our seven day forecast. I know it probably looks cold to you guys, but this won’t be enough to push most birds out of the state but it’ll still get the wimpy ones going.

Still snowing and blowing. We are now in a blizzard warning. Can’t really tell by looking at the ground as most of the snow is blowing right into the tree rows and cattail sloughs, which is a good thing. Visibility came up for a little bit and in the course of an hour I counted 11 flocks of Honkers heading south. Only about 100 yards up. Guessing they will stop at the first big water they find. Did have one flock spinning a couple fields so they must be hungry. Kind of tempting to go out this afternoon and see if we can run some traffic , but a big part of my brain says I don’t hate them that bad. The roads are pretty icy and I really don’t wanna jackknife my trailer. I need to get a topper for my pick up.

Didn't see a migration today this far south. Maybe tomorrow...

This was this morning when the blizzard conditions were starting.. Driving in this stuff simply sucks especially when you can only see at best 20 yards in front of you. Thankfully, this was the first one of the year so I could still see the gravel on the roads. Always petrified about a head on collision!

Sarah knew it was going to be a rough one for me today so when I came home there was a fresh batch of peanut butter cookies waiting! Always helps settle my nerves.
