I have a stand built but I'm hoping for lower water and that I don't need it this weekend. I don't want to make her first time at the blind a fiasco. I had the stand built prior to last weekend but the water went up and it didn't work. It's going to be like trying to contain a tornado on a pinhead.

You got to start somewhere. That's what it's all about with new pups. I'd rather have fire and brimstones that timid and meek any day. One you can work with the other you can't fix.

Trump Sr. has already brought me a cool front and water levels on the steady fall, with a very promising forecast for next week as well. Already bringing back greatness.

Standing in my back yard this morning while airing out Remi I may have seen a good sized flock of teal at high speed headed for the bayou, and several flocks of wood ducks in the short time I was there. Something I haven't seen in a few years, which was the norm years ago. Blake sent me a text yesterday evening saying there were snows passing overhead.

Looking forward to tomorrow morning.

Date: 11/16/2024

Direction and Velocity: ENE around 5 mph

Temperature: 58

Moon phase: Big and bright

Waterfowl Activity: Very few seen

Waterfowl Responsiveness: pretty good

Hunters: Me and Bill

Malfunctions: HIGH WATER

Dog(s): Remi's first hunt

Special Equipment: None

Curses: Just the high water

Kudos: Having a few birds for Remi to fetch

Birds By Species: 1 GW 1 Gadwall 1 spoonbill 4 BW

Remi did a really good job this morning, I'm satisfied. She should get in her grove as the season progresses. Very little shooting heard this morning and I haven't talked to anyone that filled a limit. Some scratched.

Remi is still a wild child. Our blind area is a mess! We have a boat load of brush cut and will be headed back that way shortly.

Bill and I ran out to bait our traps last night around 8 pm. Only two traps had a trace of bait when we left last Sunday, but we fouund 16 in the 7 traps. It's what was for breakfast.

Nothing better in the duck world in my opinion than being satisfied with your pup’s first outing! Congrats to you both.

Date: 11/17/2024

Direction and Velocity: ENE 10 to 15

Temperature: Warmer than yesterday

Moon phase: Big and bright

Waterfowl Activity: Many flocks low and high early

Waterfowl Responsiveness: pretty good

Hunters: Me and Bill

Malfunctions: HIGH WATER

Dog(s): Remi. She did well. She'll be 1 year old in two days. I'm really looking forward to lower water. She kept my left side soaking wet, both days. If we get this cooler weather they speak next weekend, I'll have to wear a rain jacket.

Special Equipment: None

Curses: Just the high water

Kudos: Again, having birds for Remi

Birds By Species: 2 GW 2 spoonbill 5 BW

I left for the hunt this morning not expecting much and I was okay with that. My only hope was that we'd knock down a bird or two for Remi. Turns out we were pretty busy in the first 1/2 hour of LST and I thought we'd fill before 7, then it quit. We did have the opportunities to fill in that time, but we let those slip away.

Bill with the birds. My outer case is scratched making this fuzzy look. I now have that fixed; I think.

Remi in a state I rarely see. She loves the top of the houses. Besides the scratched outer box, I'm shooting through the mosquito netting I put around her kennel.

This male boat tale grackle sat one our tall spinner poles serenading the ladies for quite a while. He had several females show up during his concert. We don't use the spinners during the main season.

Very cool, glad for you DC! Sounds like Remi's coming along nice and rewarding your efforts and even had some birds for her to get.

Probably going to get better with the birds if we can get your water out.

I can't remember ever seeing a dog in that position.
Happy to see you getting a few ducks - our water is still way too high.

She's something else. I had a run in with her and her hard head when I got home for lunch today. She's testing me.

Those further south or with an actual marsh did well and finished early. We just didn't have the flight.

We had no flight at Pecan Island on Saturday and from what I heard there was no flight today. Headed down to Pecan Island in the morning.

Birds By Species: 3 GW teal

One teal that I pulled down near the island to our east was still very lively and it made it to the flooded grass which is normally high and dry. I sent Remi out in the general direction hoping she would pick up the scent, which she did. She was downwind of the bird and went to the exact spot the bird had entered the grass. She worked the area thoroughly, stopping when asked, and not asked, to take direction. Unfortunately, the bird gave her the slip. She responded immediately to the recall which was something I was happy to see as it was her first recall from a live bird chase. She made similar but longer retrieve to the same island on one of our other birds which had made it into the grass. She brought that one back to hand alive.

We missed an opportunity on a flock of 5 gadwall which could have been caught with a dip net raised from the blind. The bird activity had been nonexistent for a long period, so I took this time to remove knots from my call lanyard. Apparently, Bill was watching me fumble with this task when he mumbled something. I looked up in his direction and there were three gadwall floating over the blind dropping to just over the water in the east pond on Bill's side, with the other two over me which Bill had seen, and I didn't. Bill hadn't seen the three behind him. He never touched his gun, and I had no shot. I will dream of these tonight. They were in our face, slow and low into the wind.

Those who hunt just a mile or two south of us made their usual ride back to the truck before 8 with limits. The water did fall a bit, but it's measured in fractions. Hopefully the low tides overpower the high tides from here on out.

Heard a lot of "no flight" on Saturday, my own marsh hunt included.
