Teal Season

Postby jrock75 » Mon Sep 22, 2025 8:57 am

Date: 9/20

Time: Morning

Location: Blind #14

Cloud Cover: Mostly Sunny

Wind Direction and Velocity: Not much to speak of

Temperature: Not too hot and not too humid

Special Notes: September teal opener

Waterfowl Activity: We didn't see anything flying in the darkness and when shooting time came I was a little worried when for the first couple of minutes there wasn't much happening. Then it was game on. Birds were coming from all directions and not following a particular flight path. The groups were very small 1-4 birds per.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Fast and furious from all directions. They clearly wanted to be in this field.

Hunters: 6; me and my annual LA group (Brett, Chris, Jason, Charlie, Chris, Cory)

Malfunctions: I left Jake's whistle at the house

Dog(s): Jake had a great hunt. Very happy to see him continuing to improve even without much offseason work. This is his 3rd season.

Special Equipment: 2 spinners

Curses: None

Kudos: None

Lagniappe: None

Date: 9/21

Time: Morning

Location: Blind #14

Cloud Cover: Mostly Sunny

Wind Direction and Velocity: Very little

Temperature: Temp was actually quite nice, especially after the 30 minute rain storm

Special Notes: None

Waterfowl Activity: Not as fast and furious as the day before, but still quite steady. Once again we saw very few big groups. Activity seemed to pick around 8:30 after the rain while we were picking up.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Decoyed perfectly all morning. When they come in groups of 1-3, not many get out with 7 shooters.

Hunters: 7; me and my annual LA group (Brett, Chris, Jason, Charlie, Chris, Cory, Lane)

Malfunctions: None

Dog(s): Jake had another great hunt

Special Equipment: 2 spinners

Curses: None

Kudos: None

Lagniappe: This is the 13th year of this annual trip with high school friends. With the shortened teal season this is the first year the trip has ended up on opening weekend. Given the success of these two hunts they have decided that opening weekend needs to be the date every year.

"When they come in groups of 1-3, not many get out with 7 shooters." Ran into the iron curtain.

Date: 9/24

Time: Morning

Location: Blind #14

Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy

Wind Direction and Velocity: S 5-10. Perfect for this blind

Temperature: Very hot and humid

Special Notes: Portfolio company of ours in from Ft. Worth

Waterfowl Activity: Saw a small fraction of the birds we saw this past weekend. Hopefully the reports of new birds arriving that I heard later in the week prove true.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Just about the best responsiveness you could hope for

Hunters: 5; me and guys from Ft. Worth (Travis, Blake, Steven, Ben)

Malfunctions: None

Dog(s): Jake had another great hunt. Saved me some serious sweat and dug a several out of the grass where there is no way I could have found them. By the end of the hunt he wasn't obeying the whistle to my level of preference. I will need to clean that up.

Special Equipment: 4 spinners

Curses: None

Kudos: Some good shooting by a group that doesn't hunt much

Lagniappe: Just like opening weekend, the teal we shot are almost all fat adult males. Out of our 22 i would say that only 2-4 were hatch birds.
