About 7 nice ones, 10 "regular" ones. I suspect it would work on foxes, also. In which case it could be paid for with two nice ones. I think I'm going to try it, since I can more than likely make it back in a couple days. I'll hopefully clear $900 this year, so I have some money to play with.

Oh, make no mistake- it won't be purchased until I have the fur check deposited in the bank.

The big male red tried to kill me. Angriest fox I've ever seen. Usually, you worry about them pulling out and running away when you get close. This one was lunging directly at my chest. I was hoping he didn't get out so I wouldn't have to go get a bunch of rabies shots in my gut.

I've never done an ounce of trapping. Your stories make it seem exciting, I'm gonna have to give it a go one of these days.

I loved it, but it's a lot of work and you need to really devote some time to it to make it worthwhile.

The worst are the days when you know- just KNOW- that there's nothing in them. But you have to go work them all, anyway, just in case. Otherwise, it's sort of like a mini-hunting trip every set or location. Like when you go hunting, you wonder "will I get any birds today", or "will I see a deer today", only multiplied a lot. Each different location I go to each day is like it's own "hunt", with the same feelings- did I get anything, do I have a smart digger I need to try and outwit, do I have a flipper, and so on. Right now, I have 4 locations set, so each morning is like having 4 days' worth of duck hunts rolled up into one hour, if that makes sense.

One thing that differs for me is that when I trapped, 95% of what I got was dead when I got to the traps. Set up on streams and creeks with drowner setup

I'll add that all I trapped was mink, muskrat, and beaver. Never got a fox or coon, but a few others, just not regular amounts. Maybe 1 or 2 a year.

Mink and muskrat sets are similar, aren't they? I don't trap either of them, so don't really know much about them.

Used 330s for beaver, but mink and muskrats would go through often. And ya, musk/mink are the same setup for me. You dont have any dive setups?

I saw a pure white mink one time, I had no idea what it was until I got home and researched it. Living down south I had never seen one, I was in my duck boat and we watched it watch us for about 20 minutes on the opposite bank. Pretty cool little animal.

No, because I don't like toting around waders or hip boots. And most of the ditches are too small for drown sets. They're just something that aren't real "convenient" down here- we have no rocks, and the land is flatter than piss on a plate, so anyplace that has water usually has a bottomless mud bottom. Offhand, I don't know anybody that uses drown sets. Muskrats sets around here are 99% 110s, anyway.

Same here. Leg traps with no drowner usually wind up landing you a leg here if you are going for beaver, mink or muskrat. I'm definitely getting back into it next year if the prices are good.

Prices are scary good right now. I have to drop my furs off next week to the buyer to take to the early auction up in Canada. This will be the first year I've put my furs in the early auction, I don't know why. The prices are generally quite a bit higher, and the sale rates are near 100%. We'll see how it goes.

Update. Weathers still been shitty for the traps- pouring rain and mud, and insane wind. But grinding it out.

And Layniebug wanted to help scrape a coon today. She did a decent job on her piece, but my fleshing board is too tall for her. She asked me to build her one "her size"

A little sad. Had to bag up the furs to drop off with the NAFA agent tomorrow. First time putting them in the early sale, and psychologically, I don't like it. Still well over a month left, and the wall is bare, just like starting from scratch. Be hard to start putting them back up. One at a time. If the prices aren't a good bit higher, I'm gonna wait until the late auction after season's over, in the future. Just takes the piss out of me looking at nothing on the wall.

Yeah, supposedly quite a bit more. But it's still depressing to see all your shit gone. And I'm a "one big check", instead of a "two smaller checks which are actually more than the one big check" kind of guy. Stupid I know, but that's the way it is. But we'll see.

Do like I would, cash that first check and tuck it away til the late season auction check comes in.
