Gadwall?

Postby GadwallGetter530 » Fri Feb 01, 2013 10:16 pm

So my buddies and I have had this conversation a few times over a beer or two in the recent past. Its about why people turn their nose up to Mr. Gray Duck. I dont get it. They're right on the top of my list of birds I like to shoot. Ive had guys on other "forums" talk down about them. Saying they are a trash duck. It's alittle frustarting to me. Especially when they cant come up with a reason why the hate them so much, they just do. Maybe its just in our dumb ass state that those mean words towards gadwall get spoken. So I thought, hell with it, I'll pose the question to you guys since it seems we have members on here from all over the country. Do you consider Gadwall to be a "quality" duck to have on your strap or do you think of them as a trash bird ?....... As my name applies I love those damn things. They taste great and how can you not like 20 or 30 of them "DAT..DATIN" over your decoy spread and bracking down into your setup? Your response would be much appreciated.

Love the willy gadwall, wish I shot more. Welcome on my strap anytime, in my opinion its a quality bird just as good as a mallard.

The only problem I have with a gadwall is I shoot too many of them.

I sling steel at them the same as any other duck. Only birds I've specifically not shot at on purpose are a lone buffie up in Canada cuz there were a million other birds, and mergansers

Love the gads, and a prime drake is a great looking bird. Who wouldn't love that big square head hanging on the wall. At least half of what we shoot is gads, hell, I've even killed 3 with bands.

Every year I drive 800 miles to duck hunt southern Kansas. Most years it's lights out and we shoot 7+ species.

This year it wasn't, but the gadwalls were there, and we were glad to see them.

I shot just about anything. Mergansers and all. No discrimination here. I don't consider mallards to be a quality duck here. They eat just as much fish here as a merg. They start hittin the grain below us. I'll shoot a gaddy anyday

Yep, I did'nt mind. We more than made up for it with geese. We dontt get lessers here either so shooting those snack-sized canadas was a real treat.

This was a fun year...

Come down here. Shot just about every kind of duck except a cinnamon, seen one shot though. That and those some divers just can't get a call response from them.

yeah we kill bout everything here to expect for those black and mottled ducks  In the Northern part of the valley a few blue wings get shot every year, way more get killed down south in the san joaquin valley. Most of our cinnanmon teal around here get killed early and late in the season.

I love gadwall, wish we got more this year. They work the decoys and make me feel like I know what I am doing out there. CA seems to have a large amount of duck snobs, mallards are the only duck they shoot. I shoot everything, buffies get a pass most of the time, but not all the time. We shot more gadwalls last year than any other duck.

I've never heard anyone badmouth a gaddy. I think that fist sized noggin of theirs is cool looking. I have a place where I target them in ID when I'm hunting in WY.

I want to make a hunt video to post in my crews Facebook page, first I'm gonna have to get a crew, but anyway, in this vid I want to do a standard type of vid watching the birds come in and when the shots about to be called, yell "don't shoot, greenheads" and then a talk about how we don't shoot trash ducks. Think it would be fun to troll with
