Sam's Junior Brant Hunt

Postby Redbeard » Sat Feb 02, 2013 2:21 pm

A friend of mine, a big brant hunter, invited Sam out for today's junior brant hunt. There were five juniors shooting. The bay was absolutely loaded with brant. All us dad's were drooling. The two guys running the show were very patient, only calling shots on birds that were locked up just feet above the water, directly in front of the boys. They passed on several close groups that made us dad's cringe. But these guys knew what they were doing and wanted the boys to be successful on every flock. By 9:00 all boys had their limits. My buddy's son, the oldest boy in the group, shot a triple banded bird. Band on each leg and a toe tag. Very cool. Sam had a blast. Five minutes after the boys shot their final two birds, we all stood at the blind BSing and high fiving. Next thing we know brant were landing in the decoys not even 20 yards from us. I got a good video of it but don't know how to embed it. Anyone want help?

Nice job Aaron! Tell Sam I am really jealous of his geese. Glad to hear the kids had such a great hunt.

That is sweet. I love shooting brant, the way they come in low and plop right in.

Awesome tarsal tag!

Juice, that kind of band is meant to allow sightings to be reported by encounters other than killing the bird, i.e. bird watchers. Same theory as a neck collar.
Red, tell the boys I'm jealous.

Wow that's pretty cool, tell Sam I'm very jealous.
