No, the Internet was around, but not really, until about 95. Had a cell phone in 95 as well, but it was somewhere around $120 a month for 90 minutes. Made me cringe even owning it.

Got my first cell in 97. It cost me 60$ / month for 60 minutes.

The Satelite phones aren't that big. Had to rent one a few years ago, I was expecting something like the old bag phone. It was only about the size of a regular cordless phone, I was quite surprised. Worked pretty well too.

I had to rent one when my wife and I went to Burning Man. It is in the middle of the Black Rock Desert, there is no cel service and we needed to be able to check on our kids and elderly family members at home. We were there for 7 days and thought it would be too long to not talk to our kids and check in with the rest of our family.
