D~n~B's Jr duck hunt

Postby ducks~n~bucks » Sun Feb 03, 2013 1:03 am

Drew a #2 reservation at Colusa NWR today, So I went hunting. Shot 4 ducks by 7:30, could've had a limit of ducks in 20 minutes but I was off on my shooting and was down to three shells by 8:00 A.M. (25 shell limit, but still terrible, I know) Missed 3 more times by 10 am, packed up the decoys, ripped a huge hole in the Deke bag, and went back to the truck. Went to the check station and asked the guy working it if we could get another card for the afternoon if we left, he said he would pin up our cards for us, and if we were back before somene else showed up, we could have our same pond back. We went to town, grabbed a english muffin sandwich from the Burger King drive through, went to Kittles to buy a decoy bag, and headed back to the refuge. We got back to our pond at 11 and I killed 3 more ducks by 11:45. My dad asked if I wanted to stay a while and see how many geese I could pass shoot, so I did. 5 minutes after I finished my limit of ducks 4 drake Cinnammon teal land 20 yards from us. Bastards. I walked off the refuge with 2 drake Gadwalls 3 drake Green Wing Teal 1 drake Wigeon 1 hen Wigeon (Shot both of them in a double) and 2 Snow Geese. I just want to add, they did not have my usual shells at Wal*Mart, so I shot Winchester BlindSide #3's and did not have 1 cripple.

Sounds like you've had a good time. Everybody has off days. Had one this season where me and a buddy were on the X and shot our 50 shells by 10:30 with 8 ducks in the bag. Should have been a quickly but it happens.

I don't mind that I didn't shoot a limit in 20 minutes, I was just putting out the fact that if I had not been off, I would have to emphasize how many ducks were flying today. They flew non stop, from before light and were still flying when we left at the end of shooting time. Over 150 ducks came within 35 yards of us today. about 80 werre cupped up and commited, and about 50 actually landed in the docoys. By far the most memorable hunt I've ever had, One I'll remember for the rest of my life. Ive shot limits before, but the sheer number of birds flying, and the unique things that happend made it the best hunt I've ever had.

Sounds like the Blindsides patterned pretty bad if it took 25 shells to kill 3. I would go pattern a few to check it out, I doubt it just your shooting that was off.

^this^ if all your shots were inside 35 yards you might have been shooting a basketball sized pattern. Which would explain the no cripple thing too. The diamond cut wads "supposedly" extend your pattern by 10 yards.

It took 25 to kill the first 4, (80% of the birds that flew in in the morning I jumped up and shot too soon, putting them inside 15 yards flying side to side, why I missed) It only took me 5 shots to kill the other 3, then shot each goose once, killing them both.

You don't need to explain to me :) Shoot what you are comfortable with. Still need to see some pics!

I hunted again sunday, (With different shells, store was out of blindside) I showed up at noon to the refuge. By the end of shoot time I had shot 4 ducks, I only killed 2 dead the other 2 sailed but were found. I shot 3 others, but they sailed and the dog was not able to find them. All inside of 40 yards.

The range is your friend! Need to pick one load, then shoot the crap out of it. There isn't a steel load out there that won't kill a duck at 40 yards. All comes down to shooter, gun and choke.

Jealous of your Snows and Specks. Whenever I hear "got a couple geese passing by" I think Canadas, since it's all we have that just a couple would go by. For snows, there is either 10,000 of them, or none.

This is a common scene all over the Sacramento valley from October till March but those snows are hard to kill.

What's the deal with them? Can't just set up in that field with decoys and pound away? I know the rules are different over there.

You could, but not many people do, (at least that I know) because it isn't mcuh worth the effort for 6 birds.
