This is a common scene all over the Sacramento valley from October till March but those snows are hard to kill.

What's the deal with them? Can't just set up in that field with decoys and pound away? I know the rules are different over there.

You could, but not many people do, (at least that I know) because it isn't mcuh worth the effort for 6 birds.

thats only 1 bird less than ducks....

get 5 or 6 together in layouts and that's 30 birds. Not that many to you?

Access to the field they are in is difficult to obtain, the birds get a lot of pressure from sky busters and are very smart, if you want to do it right you need a massive full body spread and winter storms. No electric calls also hurts. We shoot some decoying at my buddy's goose pit but for an average guy it's quite an investment!

Oh and they have been shot at from Alaska to Canada to Washington to Oregon to California by the time they settle in for the winter in the valley.

I hear ya. I think that's why I have a hard time with them in the spring here. They've been shot their whole trip and we are one of the last stops. Not good for a rookie snow hunter.

Snows stupid? Gonna take a lot to convince me on that.

Speaking of divers, my neighbor tried telling me that buffle heads, goldeneyes, ringnecks, and canvasbacks weren't "true" divers, and that true divers are ducks like Scaup, redhead and scoters. The man is 40 something.

Buffle heads and golden eye are the essence of diver! He is what I would call a true fucktard.

Zactly. I held my toungue, then told my dad what he tried to tell me, and we had a good laugh over it, and decied if those ducks weren't "true" divers, then teal, spoonies, sprigs and wigeon aren't "true" puddlers. (sarcasm)

Actually, he is kind of right, with regard to ringnecks and cans. Why do you think cans taste so different? Their diet is different. I've also never clean a ringbill with a crustacean in them.

I've cleaned ringers and cans with small shad in them.

If we're going to say a duck is a diver because of what they eat, then you can call the mallards in my neighborhood divers. I've seen them eat fish and shrimp like it was bread or corn. They are weird here.

They are based on how they obtain their food, not what they eat. Goldeneyes here seem to eat weeds. I've never found anything besides weeds and seeds in them.
