I like Venosaur, but Jesse would be good too, ONLY if his papered name has Jesse Katsopolis in it.

I had to google katsopolis. Full house fan are we???

Anyway...she'll be born this week. Sam's very excited

Well, there you have it, he must be a great breeder if he can afford a double wide.

Sorry but, I think it is pretty arrogant to say a breed will meet it's demise without professional breeding.
The amount of time that breeders have been in the picture of any blood line or species, compared to the amount of time they were not there in the evolution, of a breed or line, is like comparing a speck of flyshit to a 50 gallon drum of white rice.
Dogs, and every other species, including man, have been doing it,and inbreeding, since the beginning of time. No species will meet their demise from breeding but, rather, they will meet their demise by lack of breeding. You know, the rainbow coalition thing, two innies or two outties trying to breed, that is the real problem here boys.
I'm sure you do great with, and by, your dogs Matt and I mean no disrespect to you in what I have said but, dogs will be dogs, even after you and I are gone.

Not a matter of being a "pro" or not not. Its a matter of breeding responsibly and bettering the breed with every litter that you produce. The irish setter and irish water spaniel folks had the same outlook as you and where are those breeds today? Good luck finding either of those dogs that will hunt and if you do it will be riddled with health issues. You are right, breeding will not be the demise of the breed as we obviously need to keep producing puppies but it is something that should be done selectively. BTW a breeder is anyone that breeds dogs be it good or bad.

Good definition, and I agree. The funny part is they bred them....in the backyard.
My friend is an active DU member with a good bitch dog. His father in law had a good stud, they knew both dogs were ok health wise, and both of them were purebred labs. They had one litter. I got one of the pups. I had my dog speyed at 6 months as I KNOW I am not a breeder nor do I want pups.

I am lucky as I got to hunt with the momma dog, and I liked her. Then I got to play with all 8 pups a few times. I finally let my friend pick Brandy for me. He knew them better than I did; and he knew which one would make a hunter. He was right. I got a good one.

Eric, (and all Chessie lovers) I am all for doing the best thing for the breed. That is why there are breed standards. My point is that you don't HAVE to go balls out, money wise, to get a good hunting dog. You have to have a little common sense. And of course genetics play a large role.

IMO the only thing that has saved Labs from the same fate as irish setters, cocker spaniles, and GOLDEN RETRIEVERS is the fact so many people like us insist on making them do the job they were bred to do.

Ouch that stung a little.

Shitty hunters, yes. The majority anyways. Before I got my lab I looked everywhere within a couple states and didn't find a single hunting GR breeding. One of my favorite dogs though...someday I will have one.

Bootlip, that shouldn't sting. If it weren't for hunters breeding dogs to do a job they would lose the good traits they were bred for. I go on the record as saying there ARE good hunting GR still in he world. Lets make sure we are clear on that okay?

I'm not sure what you are asking, but, if you are talking about the majority of GRs not being hunters, that's a fact. I'd venture to say that 9/10 GRs don't even hunt. I'm not saying its a bad breed, I've always wanted one, but the good ones are hard to find. I hope you aren't denying that fact.

TK I don't disagree with what your saying. The breed is now being used more for a family dog due to the loyalty and temperament. What I disagree with is a blanket statement about a breeds ability as a gun dog because they are not being professionally trained at some fancy kennel.

I'm no fancy trainer but I have successfully used two golden's in the field and loved every minute of it. And it was not due to my expert training obviously. The dogs not from "hunting lines", instinctually wanted to get the bird and bring it back to the boss.

I would be willing to bet most of those GR family dogs have what it takes instinctually to be a good hunting dog. Unfortunately they will not be used for that.

The lack of GR gun dog breeders is not a product of the dogs being shitty hunting dogs it's the hunting community's perception of them. Eric showed it perfectly, he likes golden's but has no confidence in them as hunting dogs because? Well no one uses them and he can't find a hunting kennel that sells them so it must be true GR suck as hunting dogs! IMO the reason GR are not sold a gun dogs is simply because no one would buy them because of these false pre conceived notions so why produce a product that the market no longer exist.

They don't hunt I'm aware that's provable but that dose not mean they would be shitty hunting dogs if someone hunted them. The instinct to hunt is still alive and well in as many golden's as labs and wire haired pointers.

The "G" stands for golden? I thought they were "ginger" retrievers.

Oh and Boot I just think its pretty arrogant of GR's to call themselves "golden" like they're so much better than the rest!

The "G" stands for golden? I thought they were "ginger" retrievers.

It's not their fault! Even labs want to be golden. My dog prefers strawberry water spaniel anyway.

It's unfortunate that we're getting this chessie. I was actually in the market for a poodle
