Assa, is your trapping season over or just done for the season?

The dogs around here have locked up like no other the last few days. Seriously, nothing is moving, im guessing they fattened up on rabbits before this latest little storm and now theyre not moving for a bit. This heavy wet snow sucks for checking traps in too, I came home yesterday probably 40# heavier with my wet pants and coat. Not to mention having chunks of snow fall from the trees and knock the snares over  Something better be moving this weekend!

Coons are in until the end of the month, but fox went out 1/31. But if I happen to catch a fox in a "coon" set, oh well  I'm done because the hides need at least two weeks to dry to go to the sale, and the runners will be picking up the first week of March, so any hides from here out probably wouldn't be ready and would be wasted. Foxes will have already lost a lot of value, because they started shedding out middle of January.

I've heard bad stuff about that, and never tried it. They'd have to go in the freezer, since they wouldn't make it in the humidity we have here. Maybe in AZ or somewhere, but not here in the barn in the summertime.

Hey Assa- Thanks for posting your season. Who rates the hides you are putting up for auction?

Mine go to the North American Fur Auction. From here, they go to a grading warehouse in Wisconsin, assigned to lots of 200, then the lots are auctioned in Toronto. Sale starts Monday, and I haven't gotten my lot numbers yet. Little pissed off.

Around here they congregate to cedar swamps when the snow gets deep. All the deer and moose are concentrated there for food and shelter. The coyotes will go in there and chew out the hindquarters on their prey and wait for them to die or become too weak to walk. Usually takes a few days. If it were me I'd try and find out where the deer are.

We don't get winterkill like you do up there. Especially not in pansy-ass Michigan. Those deer are living high on the hog. Coyotes around here don't eat much in the way of deer, they get a few, after they get hit by cars and whatnot, but they don't count on it.

Not that much snow? Then what the hell is Jehler complaining about? :D

They wreak havock on deer here. When we get to about 2 1/2 - 3 feet of snow, the deer and moose gang up in what we call a yard. They walk around in large circles to beat down trails in the snow. When the snow gets deep enough, they can't escape the yards and the coyotes move in. My grandfather told me stories of when he was a young man with a family to feed, he would sit next to the trail and kill moose with an axe. Imagine what a pack of coyotes can do in a couple months.

I'm sure that has happened at some point in the history of the upper midwest, but these days we don't get that kind of snow cover.

Just got them today. With the exception of my coons, they graded really, really well, almost all XL select heavy, which is one step below the top, out of roughly 8 main grades. And my reds graded extra dark, which is the best you can get, color wise. I'm gonna take a beating on the coons, though.

Got the live auction broadcast tomorrow for coons, and Friday for the foxes. Probably won't watch the coons, since mine are so poor, but I'll be glued to that bitch on Friday.

Where can I watch this?

Should be able to see it here. I can't access it unless I login to my NAFA account, but try this link and see if it works. On the left, there is a box asking to use either Flash or Windows Media to Watch. Click Flash (or Windows if it's an old machine), and you should get a message saying "Auction will resume Feb 20th" or something like that. I don't know if you can get there without an account, though, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
