Schnuck's rant

Postby aunt betty » Thu Mar 07, 2013 12:40 pm

There's a grocery store chain in town called Schnuck's. Really nice store but it's kind of..."Chicagoish".
I just left there kind of angry. Shopping for stuff on a list. Some of the items I don't know where they are or even what the packaging looks like.

I was looking hard for Ricotta cheese. Planning on making lasagna. Picked up a whole cart full of other stuff but got stuck on the cheese. Schnuck's has cheese in three locations. It's a HUGE store and I got tired of going from end to end just to comparison-shop on cheese. On one end they had mozarella for $1/ounce and on the other it was 25 cents. The deli side is higher...High-dollar lah-tee-dah hold your pinky up kinda cheese. Have seen people rack up $100+ bills at the checkout on a little bit of cheese. NOT ME!

There were four employees gaily chatting away at the deli. Looked like they were having fun. Didn't want to interupt their party to ask a silly question like, "where is the cheap Ricotta?". I left my cart full of stuff with my list there and left. They obviously needed something to do. I provided work for the needy. lol

There were many employees and most of them weren't busy. Odd but that's the way retail is these days. Look like you need some help and they scurry away with hands in pockets. When I see this...I will go to the back, get a flat cart, load it with 400 pounds of concrete mix, wheel it to the front, make my phone ring, and say, "sorry gotta go...emergency".

I have time to play games. You don't wanna get me started.

Maybe I don't belong in a grocery store where the wealthy people go.
I'm going to the poor fokes grocery sto from now on.
County Market.

I substitute large-curd cottage cheese for ricotta in my lasagna. Don't care for the dryness of ricotta. For the record, I HATE cottage cheese anywhere else, but in lasagna in place of ricotta it is delicious. Give it a try sometime.

I couldn't even find cottage cheese. I was looking for it. There's something called dry cottage cheese but they only package it in very large containers so nobody buys it anymore. The way the wife makes lasagna now...not cooking the noodles first, wet curds won't hurt anything.

I hate going to the store because I have to see. They have everything arranged to trick you into buying what they want you to get. Re-arranging the store constantly to make you walk the whole danged thing.
I can't find what I want and say f it.

Some poor sucker has the job of putting back all that stuff I grabbed before I gave up.
I sincerely hope it's the employee that I saw several times walking around with his hands in his pockets. Was in the store 25 minutes. Had time to take notes.

The Parmisian cheese from Kraft was hidden by the door that goes to the store room. WHY didn't I think of looking there?
Didn't really want canned cheese but was comparing anyway.
They had different Kraft Parmisian fresh shredded cheeses in two other places as well???
You'd think the cheese would be...I dunno...by the milk?
NOOOOOO! Not in that crazy effin' store.

They don't want you comparing prices? OH, I get it. That's why them corporate a-holes didn't stop and ask if I needed help "to save money". I totally get it now.

I can never find the pamesan cheese, either. There is one "dispenser" hanging by the spaghetti, but it's always empty. Damned if I know where it is elsewhere.

Had a nice chunk of parm in the cart. We tried fresh shredded on our spaghetti once and never went back.
A little chunk like 4-8 ounces will last two people a long time.

Had a little pear-shaped ball of Mozarella. Saw a segment on America's Test Kitchen on Mozarella.
The stuff they put on pre-shredded cheese isn't very tasty. Lotta salt in it too.
Better to get a hunk and use your shredder.
It was about the same price. $4/pound.

In this store you need skates...But if you wore them there would have to be an ambulance parked at the front for when you ran into all the oblivious women with two kids and a cart in tow. Going 70 miles an hour but not sure where to...will figure it out when they get there. Fun stuff. At least they know where the cheese is.

Something I observed:
I shop in two states. Illinois and Arkansas.
Up here in Illinois it's all hurry scurry and don't ask questions. Move along, don't make waves. The employees in retail avoid the customers at all costs and it is obvious.

Down in Arkansas the store manager will help you try to find something he knows he doesn't have and will offer to stock that item. Then they will offer to help carry your groceries to your car for you. It's such a lovely thing to not be in such a God-awful hurry.

I love the south and that is just one of the many reasons.
The phrase, "y'all need some help" is another thing I just love to hear.
It's pretty simple and only takes a minute.

I'll third it, or I guess fourth since MeatBaller already chimed in.

AB, i shop at that schucks very frequently. though i go after work (11pm) and have nothing but good things to say about the staff of the graveyard shift. from what i can tell, the recent re arranging of the store was foreshadowed by the same layout for the past 2 years, before that, i didnt shot there. they have always treated me good and have quality products (for the most part), which is why i do my shopping there rather than at walmart or county market. maybe try going later at night when the hard working people are working.....

Am I the only one who thinks huntall works the night shift at Schnucks?

I LOVE mixing one of them single serving pineapple cups into an equal amount of cottage cheese or a bit more. Was going to suggest AT try it but backed out because of the gey factor.

Could you tell me where they keep that Ricotta cheese I was looking for. I walked a mile looking for it.

My wife said it's next to the cottage cheese. So I asked where that is. She said, "next to the Ricotta" and grinned at me.

Hey huntal6. Are you the guy who bought a long camera lens off me last fall? I wonder how that worked out.
