What do you guys think?

Postby NuffDaddy » Sun Mar 10, 2013 8:55 pm

I still live at home with my parents while I'm going through school and they aren't lab fans so I haven't been able to have a duck dog. But my uncle just got a female lab puppy for a house pet. He is not a hunter and has offered to give me full time access to train the pup and use her for hunting whenever I wanted. Do you guys think this is possible to train a dog that won't live with me? I know it's an odd situation and I'm not sure about it.

My dog is with a pro right now, for three months. She won't be living with him forever. I think it's fine and it will only help you with future dogs.

Almost forgot. You are going to need to keep him on the same page as you. He will be the biggest limiting factor, after yourself.

This! There is no point trying to train anything into the dog if he won't enforce it when your not there. Otherwise you can make it happen.

Without turning this into the DHC gun dog forum, I'm gonna say you'll have your work cut out for you. Finding time to work a pup who lives with you can at times be a challenge in itself. On my work days I don't always have the ability to get 2 or 3 OB sessions in. I'll get my 1 in and then spend time in the house reinforcing.

It can be done, but i think you'll be at a disadvantage when time is an issue. You'll have to not let that get you down. And as Eric stated, your uncle's gonna have to be on the same page as you

If I was a young man with no responabilites I would save my money, get a layout boat and forgo the need of a dog. Time and money better spent.

I'll definitely have to have a good talk with him about it and make sure we are on the same page.
He also has a 15 year old son that i have taken on the past 2 youth duck hunts and he is really starting to like it. I'm hoping I can set it up so it's more so my little cousins dog so in a few years when I move into my own place and get a dog I don't leave this one hanging in a fenced in backyard for the rest of its life.

Are your parents not fans of labs or retrievers or big dogs or just dogs in general?

they are pretty much just setter fans. Any other dog they seem to have an excuse for why they don't want one in their house. They have had an Irish setter, a Gordon setter, and now an English setter.

how does having a layout boat remove the need for a dog?

I only hunt in knee deep marshes and flooded fields. The cripples in the cattails and the corn is where the dog would be nice.

I was living with my in-laws when I got my 2nd dog due to remodelling on the house. MY FIL told my wife that we didn't need a 2nd dog and that he didn't want a 2nd dog in his house. Needless to say I went slightly ballistic. Something was said to the effect that I didn't need his permission to get another dog and that I would be bringing a dog back with me from the breeder either to his house or I would be moving out. Told my wife to tell her dad to say that to my face. And the pup stayed at his house for several months.

Oh, I know they're good guns. Just for the amount of hunting that the average guy does (myself included), there is no way to justify it. So I think a lot of the "___________(insert B gun here) is the best gun out there" is more self-justification than otherwise. For guys like most on here, hunting hard 50 days a year and more, I'm sure they are worth every penny. For the 4 weekend a seasoner, they're hardly necessary. Want one? Heck, buy whatever you want. But don't blow smoke up my ass. (Not you, TK, just the jackwagons who congregate in the Ranger Shack signing in in the mornings with brand new waders, brand new hats, wearing their lanyards into the shack for the drawing, and asking way too many questions. Way too loudly at that hour of the morning. We all chuckle at them, usually.

I just really don't like people. There are fewer than 5 people I can stand to be around for any length of time. And I don't lose sleep over it.
