Clocks were invented to be able to more accurately determine longitude when sailing back in the 1500s. Before then, navigators could accurately determine their latitude, but had to guess at longitude, making getting anywhere an iffy proposition at best. So a Frenchman by the name of Jean-Jaqcues Longines (that's why they named them "Longitude lines", after the Frenchman) developed a reliable clock which could keep time on a ship, enabling the navigator to get an accurate bearing. Now that they had clocks, and could determine latitude and longitude, sailors could get anywhere with accuracy, leading the Vikings to land in Greenland. So before 1500 or so, there was no time. The next time you're late for work, blame the French, and Leif Erikson for bringing clocks to North America. If not for them, we could have been the lazy Europeans.

That's what's great about Assa. Upon first reading you don't know weather to believe him or want to kick him square in the taint! I jumped between the two options as well on this one.

Yeah, but you work on a ship...history man, history. It was used by the navigator, engineer or captain. Maybe some others, but those are the ones I know used it.

Navigator= deck side. Usually the mate, captain or in special situations the pilot.

Fuck history, it already happened, who cares! Strait Meat Honker. They have a position called pilot that is more or less a over achieving captain. They know a specific part of a waterway down to the t and guide lost captains on specific waterways. They aren't on a ship at all times only when there aid is needed from either the captain or the owner, they get flown out and tell the captain where to go.

I was qualified as a Coast Guard Coxswain when I was an E-3 back in Texas. It was a lot of fun driving around the small boats.
