Of course it's not every-day math like how many gallons of diesel does Jehler need to get to the jobsite but is still important to us all.

What really concerns me is that nobody seems to give a chit about math because "someone else can figure it out".
Eventually you'll be the 'someone'. Then we're all eff, eff, effed.

Try laying out a stair-stringer without math. Just guess.
Hard to believe a carpenter is also a math-hater.
You can't build stuff square and true (as easily) without geometry and math.
Design a simple truss sometime.

Write down the formula we use for calculating stairs. It's COMPLICATED and involves redistributing the remainder of a division problem back into the solution. I'll bet order of operations matters.

Who the hell needs a formula for stairs? I need a tape measure and a pencil. All the math I use carpentering I learned by grade 7.

For fuck's sake, nobody is saying "I don't have to use math". What is being said is, if you love math, fine. But let's not try and pretend that it has an application in every day life. By the same rationale being bandied about here, students should be taught the difference between alkanes and alkenes because they run a fricking gas grill. Silliness. I care as much about derivatives as you do about ancient Latin. And while we're on that, maybe everyone should have to learn Latin because it's the basis of so much of our language. Or we could just teach them how to properly use English instead.

I didn't. They taught me "do shit in parentheses first", and that was that. No cute, catchy mnemonics or anything. Just "do the shit in parentheses first". Simple.

At the absolute most all you need is a tape measure, square, protractor, vernier caliper and micrometer depending on what it is. Using those things all you need is to know how to read them and add/subtract necessary measurements. We're not trying to figure out matricies or theoretical physics. Quit overcomplicating basic life people.

Here's an example of stair calculations the way I was taught in carpenter school. It was a high school class.

Suppose you're want to build steps and the distance "up" is 53 inches.

I start by dividing. 53/7= 7 with a remainder of 4 Someone with a calculator do the decimal way but my tape measure don't do decimal system...
If we did metric stairs would be a whole lot easier but then I'd need a metric tape measure and a metric framing square.
So what do you do with the remainder of 4?

Uhhh... I'm letting someone who actually knows how to build stairs and can do it in their head continue from here.

It's not a remainder of 4, it's a remainder of .57. So that's roughly 9/16. Drop your risers to account for the joist being the last riser, leaves you with 6 risers, and you still need 9/16 of an original riser to make up. 9/16 of 7" is roughly 3 5/8", which is what you need to make up over the course of 6 risers. 6 divided by 3 5/8 is about 9/16. Add the 9/16" to the original 7", and you have a total riser height of 7 9/16" for 6 risers.

You can actually drop a step out of that process, but I thought Betty might argue. Seriously, you can easily do it with a pencil and scrap wood, using nothing but very basic math. Betty, I have no clue what you're talking about a "formula".

If you're a forward observer and calling in an artillery fire mission....you want the fire direction control officer to be really good at math.

They send the firing data......elevation and quadrant to the guns. If you're sitting on the gun/target line it can get ugly fast if they screw up.

I never knew that. Thought they just sent them an 8 or 10 digit grid, and sent out a test shot before firing for effect.

Although now that I think about it, that's just average Joe calling in a fire mission. I guess the FOs need to worry about cliffs/mountains by the target, parabolas, and all that shit.

Artillery Officers get relieved and kicked out of the Army regularly for doing exactly that. Calculating all that stuff and then putting half of the required powder screws up a lot of things too.

christ almighty Jim and John, you guys make risers way too complex. i just draw that shit on a board until it's right

as long as my shit is level and close enough to grade, everyone is happy. if it's not to grade, we tell the fucking carpenters to shim it and shut it.

It's actually quite a bit more complicated than that but it would take an essay for me to explain....one of my MOS's was Artillery FO.
You're right that they usually fire first round smoke to check the data but many times we called for first round HE as a matter of getting things on target ASAP. FO almost always calls for what round and fuse is to be fired as he has his eyes on target and surrounding landscape.

Same here. Never understood why people thought figuring out stringers was the pinnacle of carpentry. Come to some of my jobs and cut 3 piece crown for crazy vaulted and cathedral ceilings, then tell me how hard your stringers are to figure out. I do a lot of molding, and a high percentage of it is crown, and I still make mistakes pretty regularly on it from getting to complacent.
