Gents, As fishing season is here, this is how to safely remove barbed hooks embedded in skin. It works.

If that barb catches a nerve, you're screwed though.

Ive always cut the hook to a strait shaft and fed it through the rest of the way.

It works, you have to pull straight back in line with the hook and it pulls the barb out at the correct angle. Don't dig barbed hooks out.

digging them out would hurt like hell. I've been hooked 2x where the barb was in. I just fed the hook the rest of the way through my hand so I didn't have to pull the barb out the wrong way. Hurt some but just left a little hole that heeled up quick.

It depends on how good the fishing is versus air temperature. The better the fishing and number my hand the easier it will get yanked out. I did do quite a bit a nerve damage wrenching 2 pts of a treble in my hand. Dont feel it anymore, nerves grow back too!

Been there, done that. I dug one out of my knuckle with a dull pocket knife and I pulled one out f my brother's grlfriend's mother on the boat last summer. Her's wasn't so bad, it went all the way through. We cut the barb off and used this method to pop it out. Worked like a charm.

Been hooked three times. Second was the worst. We got back to the dock, I drank all the Jaeger I could find on the boat and slapped hand down on the cleaning table while another captian went at it with the pliers. Worst because the barb went right into the bone perpendicular, no way to go but out the way it came.

Other time was in the face. Gal was having trouble getting a king under control behind the boat. Hook ripped out and the whole deal came flying at me and the hook caught me right below the eye. Just went down into the v-berth and pushed it through. If that had been a dipsy diver it would have taken my head clean off.
