QUESTION:

Does the coast guard have the same rank system as the army, or do they use the navy system?

We don't use the navy ranks, we use Coast Guard ranks. They are similar but there are small differences.

Bet you didn't know this TK but the CG is older than the U.S. navy....

No I didnt know that. As you might guess, I have never met a real coastie in my entire life. I only saw one of your boats once, and that was on the Mississippi river near New Orleans.

I did take the coast guard boating class online, even though its not required for me. It was good info for a noob like me.

That post made me laugh because of the Sergant Major one about staying off the grass. We used to have a Master Chief here that we called "hands in pockets" because instead of staying off the grass he would yell at you about having your hands in your pockets.

To this day I have it engrained in my mind to stay off the grass, even when going to class at college I stay on the sidewalk.

To this day there is nothing that pisses me off more than someone with their hands in pockets asking if they can help.
Its a contradiction. Body language saying I dont want to help while the mouth is saying I do want to help. PISSES ME OFF GOOD!
Army life made me this way.

It's ok I still curl my fingers when I am walking somewhere, I get asked all the time why I do it.

Wife is the worst offender. You would think after 30 years... she will stand there witha scowl on her face, hands in pockets. Her mouth says you want help?..but her face and body say, I dont wanna do this effing chit.
She will never get it and I sure as heck aint telling her. I get furious every time she does it.

I've been a PO since 2008. 2nd class since 2010.

Same here. It's quite the habit. I've been out since 97, and still walk on the sidewalks only. And tuck my hands in the back of my pants.

I make it a point to never stand up at attention when the military guys do or to stand in any kind of formation. And if its cold, I'll put my hands in my pocket. Even though I work for the military I make the distinction clear that I am a civilian.

In Coast Guard boot camp whenever you walked though a doorway you had to lift your foot up like you were walking trough a hatch on a ship. For a month after boot camp I was I was lifting my foot when I walked through a doorway. My family got a good kick out of that one.

I worked with a marine sniper for a few years before he transferred out. Every morning at briefing I would bring up the movie Shooter and how sweet Bob Lee Swagger was with that rifle
