The animals aren't a big problem. The main problems for her are upkeep on the land and commute.

Tough decisions is what makes life interesting. Sounds like something you and the mrs. need to sit down and discuss when you get home. See what it would take to make it work where you are at. I'd get rid of the animals except for a pig and steer to butcher each year. I would also see what I could do to minimize the land upkeep. If mowing is the biggest issue, get her a Skag zero turn. Then get her a pickup, trailer and she could start her own mowing business. Gives you a way to hide some cash and taxes with deductions for business. Then all she has to worry about is the commute which she will be doing for her business, so take off the miles.

Reb I know you love her but I'd do whatever I could to not live in the city if it were me. I'd downsize animals and or hire someone if I had to.

There are some serious benefits I'm considering to both sides. I'm stumped. The more I think the more confused I get. Been listing pros/cons and I'm really leaning to what SIR suggested. Best of both worlds in one way since I don't spend much time at home anyways.

Here's what I got so far.
Keeping my current job and moving but still keeping some of the land:
Pros; 90 days off, more time spent in the boat, thailand trips don't get cut short or cut out all together, less work when I'm on off, more free time for whatever I want, Christmas and thanksgiving off, hunting season off,
Cons; Not as many animals, no more of my self grown food, giving up the country life, living close to people

New job and staying in the country:
Pros; right at paid off, staying in the country, all the things that go with country life
Cons; shorter trips to thailand, probably going to sale the boat, less amount of time off, possible working holidays, working parts of hunting season,

She doesn't do all that. I could tell her this is how it's going to be and this is what we're going to do and she'd put a smile on her face and do it but I'm trying to be considerate.

You've got 20 acres that you say is mostly hardwoods and fruit trees. How much land upkeep can there be?

Sounds to me like she just wants to move to the city. I'd start by offering to get rid of most if not all of the animals and see what she says about that. If not that tell her you'll hire a guy to mow the lawn when you're gone. With those two things out of the way, she doesn't have much work to do and you get to keep your house in the country.

Tending to the fruits, the garden, it's not a whole of work for her. Just more than she really wants to do. She stays busy with anywhere from4-8 hours a day for about 5 days a week. Some of it is a little to physical for her(5'2" 100lbs soaking wet). She does ok, just wants to go to school to be a teacher and be able to visit her parents regularly when I'm gone. A lot more to it than it seems to be based on the info given.

Im feeling this dilemma sort of. I live on 16 acres in the country and spend ~375 on gas a month to just commute to work. Closest store is 15 miles one way. Yes, this is possible in NY.

I guess the pole dancing idea was not a good one? At least you would know where she was at night. You could stay at the club and keep an eye on her.

Look dude, you need to quit riding the fence here. You know damn good and well, deep down inside, what you are going to do.

Sweet Chereaux has minor asthma woes that agricultural spraying and even rice chaff at harvest can make a pain, so I gave up country living for a small town home. And having just finished the now minor chore of mowing a double town lot before reading this, I'm reminded of my father's advice, "You don't want to be a farmer, you just want to know a lot of them." That's now my situation, and it turns out Dad was right. Small town life is pretty cushy, as long plenty of countryside is readily accessible.

I'm with TK on this. You already know, on some level, what you're going to/need to do. Just bite the bullet and do whatever it is that you're going to do. Pondering too much on this sort of stuff usually doesn't do much but prolong the aggravation, and increase the anxiety.
