Maybe I just have too much shame, but WTH. I just couldnt ever do that to another person.
Although I can picture law enforcement with their, I'm above the law attitude, thinking because they have a badge it's fine to do.

I'm willing to bet that they guy with the sawzall was doing as he was told. He doesn't do his job, and the kids don't eat. IMO questioning ethics, especially in a military position, is not a part of the job description...

I'll more than likely just mount it right there in the field.

We follow orders yes, but at the same time I have worked with K9 extensively here and their nose is keen enough to where they can tell exactly where something is. They don't cost 40k to train for no reason.

I agree, but if your commanding officer gave you an order, would you follow it, or question his methods/ethics?
I'm not in, nor will I be in your shoes, but I don't think that questioning or getting mad at the guy that does what he is told to do is the way to go...I can't imagine that I would/could feel bad for following orders, but again I haven't been in that situation.
I think that we should respect those that do follow those orders, no matter how hard they may be to follow.

If the answer is yes to either one of these then yes I will question it and will refuse to follow through. If the K9 was alerted then by all means search the area. On the same hand though do not cause unnecessary destruction to property. This is where you find a grey area with the military. We have the technology and training to find the smallest detail of drugs, explosives and etc. there is no need to cause the destruction of the magnitude that Rick mentioned unless there was more than just a "tip" presented to them.

Incidently, that sawzall incident I described was not an isolated one but something that happens quite often here in south Florida. There are other boat owners with similar stories. A lot of drugs are being smuggled through these waters and the CG and CBP definitely has their hands full trying to stop the flow but their power is pretty much absolute on the open waters of the Atlantic ocean.

Cops in a small town just down the road stopped him, and said they smelled marijuana. Asked to search his truck, he said no. SO they impounded it, took him to the station, and he had to call his mom to get a ride home. Next afternoon they called and told him he could pick up his truck. The steering wheel was put back on at least, but his dash and all the components, door panels, window cranks, everything, were in the bed of his pickup. Turns out they had a tip that there was a white ford running dope to the projects, and he drives a white ford. Never mind that there are about 300,000 white ford pickups in the area.
Never even got a "sorry about that". Nothing. To this day, he swears he's gonna put that cop in a wall if he gets a half a chance. And he has no recourse whatsoever, according to an attorney.

I don't think the CG had a real hand in this because of the time it would take to get command approval to do something like that. I've waited hours before just to get permission to board boats. I've heard of cases where it takes hours to get permission to chase a boat that ran from the CG.
So yea I'd be really surprised if you saw a Coastie with the saw in his hand.

Something along that anyways in 46 CFR. I could be wrong, I do know they always call the bridge for permission to board but I'm pretty certain they can board regardless of permission.

United States Code 14 sec .89 is what gives the USCG the authority to board any vessel. When I said they had to get approval I meant from the local command. A lot of local commands on shore really hate bothering boaters and are only looking to board people that are an obvious or seem to be an obvious violation of some law like safety regulations.
I'm glad that I no longer have to board boats and do that shit. I always enjoyed the life saving part of the job more than the LE side of it.

waterfowlman wrote:Tomkat wrote:Olly what was the typical mood of the citizens you boarded?

I think I can answer that for Olly TK. I would guess that the vast majority of boaters are glad the USCG is on the job. We've only been boarded a few times when arriving from foreign ports and the CG guys were always very professional and pretty cool once they realized we were on the up and up. It's mostly the lawbreakers, asshole boaters, and merchant marine, but we don't show it so the inspections go as smoothly a spossible, that have a problem with the USCG fellas.
