Make it $1000 cash and I will line up 40' of shingles. I will record myself going and putting 4 nails in each shingle and post it. Gang does the same. If he doesn't do it faster, $1000 in my pocket, $2000 in yours if he's faster.

That's not the argument. He claimed that hand roofing was faster than a nail gun. You said you were betting on gangrig hand nailing faster than I could nail gun them. Can't just change the bet because you feel like it.

The only thing in question is the speed of hand hammering over nail gun. Its not fair, you are right because you know the answer.
I dont know if I'm fast or not. I don't race anyone while roofing. I usually lay 5-6 bundles of architecturals an hour on a typical roof by myself. Obviously a lot slower with more valleys.

he said, hand driving was faster, since we were talking about roofing I assume he means he can roof faster with a hammer than a gun. No where did he say a gun can't lay down nails fast. I have seen guys lay shingles with hand drives that just left me jaw dropped, I believe himEric Haynes wrote:jehler wrote:nope. Bare roof, 12 bundles of shingles at the peak. I can put in nails faster with my tallywhacker than any of 'em can do with a gun or a hammer.

I don't do work by the hour, only bid. $450/sq here for strip and reroof is the norm. So the longer it takes, the less I make. Never had a roof leak in my time in the business and don't ever plan to.
I have nailed a few by hand where compressors weren't an option or weren't optimal and I will admit, it's more consistent as far as nail depth. I am actually thinking about dropping the money on a couple Paslode roofers, but a little skeptical because of the 4 framers I have constantly needing maintenance.

They are nice. But it's always so easy to find about 20 used Bostitches at the pawnshop.

RonE wrote:Seems to me that for a whole roof (stacked or not) it would be installed in less hours if nailed by hand than by coil-nailer.
With a coil nailer the measuring gauge is on the nail gun, with a roofing hatchet (I like AJC) the gauge and cutter is always in your hand, you don't have to set the gun down to cut shingles. With an apron that holds 20 lbs of nails you reload about 1/20th the number of times you do with a coil nailer.
With experienced roofers, hand nailing because of not having to run ail lines, extension cords or fill gas tanks allows the roofer with a hatchet to start 15 to 45 minutes earlier than the guy with the gun.
Sure, you can line up a row of shingles and shoot them down faster with a nail gun than you can hand nail them but one row of shingles don't count for shit when it comes to roofing, unless it is the last row of the day and cold beer is at the end.
One thing about roofing is that the customer never comes up to inspect your work and if it doesn't leak or blow off, even crappy work gets by.
