Eric, I never said an animal would laugh off a shot from a .50, it would kill, eventually. In the western states, .50 cal in a muzzleloader is considered the bare minimum caliber for big game hunting. I am well aware of how big .50 is, i'm also aware that black powder is a lot less potent than smokeless.

If you were aware of western history, you'd know a couple of guys came out here exploring a few hundred years ago. they brought military .49 caliber rifles and tried to shoot grizzlies, they decided that wasn't such a good idea.

I live approx. 45 miles from the border of YNP, we have grizzlies in the woods here. To not take that into consideration when going into the mountains would be foolish. Since you live in a state that has never had grizzlies within 1000 miles of it, you just need to shut the fuck up, period.

Doc, sorry to derail your thread, wasn't my intention.

Just because I don't live there, doesn't mean I don't know anything about it. For someone who doesn't even hunt, nor ever black powder hunted, you sure seem to know a lot.

That's legit. MT would definitely be the twink so I would imagine he's taken quite a few bears in his day. Probably multiple in the same day.

On a serious note.

I only hunt with a muzzleloader for big game. I have 2 Thompson Centers. An Encore and the same one Jim was talking about, the Omega. If I were you I would get the Omega. I shoot both of mine at pretty long ranges with nice groups and I have never had anything move farther than 5 feet after a shot. It uses 209 primers which means none of the dreaded "click" you used to get with #11 primers. They are also super easy to clean. Just unscrew the breech plugs and run a brush and cloth through.

Not sure where you live and what the laws are, but here you can put a scope on black powder rifles so the Encore has a scope and the Omega is open sights for hunting the thick stuff.

Doc, just as MT said, check your regs first before you buy. In Washington, we have to use an exposed cap and no glass optics. Keeps it interesting in the rain.

not trying to get this off track but i will point out a number of very large bears have been killed with a .50 and if it is set up with the right bullit-powder and shot placement it will kill the largest animal north of the friggen panama canal. you can put a bear down with a recurve bow or compound hell people shoot moose with bow,s often.yet a .50 is not enuff ????

His argument shifted to grizzlies, which he has in his backyard.
