Mystery leak

Postby 3geese4me » Tue Feb 18, 2014 7:17 pm

So I drive home today from work and notice that my truck is leaking what looks like motor oil. I check underneath to determine the culprit and its leaking from behind the front skid plate cover. I didn't have time to take the cover off to see what the problem was. Ill have to do that tomorrow. Im asking the brain trust here to inform me of what could a leak from the front of the engine be? Its a 2008 Silverado with 74,900 miles on it.

This is no shit, all serious here.

Taste it. Just dip your finger in it, and touch it to your tongue, don't drink a cupful or anything. Old antifreeze is very sweet, motor oil tastes like burnt motor oil smells. If it's neither of those, you're left with tranny or power steering fluid, which I've never been able to tell apart. But you can generally find a PS leak pretty quick, on the pump, hose or steering box. So where you're describing, if it's not the antifreeze taste or oil taste, it's transmission fluid.

Never tasted brake fluid, but I can't imagine there even being a way for that to leak where you're describing.

If you don't want to do this, dip your finger and wipe it on a piece of printer paper. You'll be able to see if it's red or not, to tell the difference between tranny fluid and motor oil. If it's antifreeze, you should be able to tell by the feel.

My first guess was power steering fluid. I just did an oil change, so the oil is going to be almost the same color as power steering fluid. I hope its the pump or a cracked line. That would be an easy fix.

On a GM the first thing I would check is the oil and tranny cooler lines going into the radiator.

The line where the transmission fluid goes in at gave out on my cousins 08 chevy about a month ago. The guy that fixed it said it's a fairly common problem.

I just went out with a flashlight and checked to see if its tranny fluid or motor oil. Definitely motor oil. So I'm guessing its the oil line. YouTube'd some videos and it looks fairly easy to fix. So ill pull the plate tomorrow and verify its the lines. I hope its not a oil pump. Which I doubt because I have pressure.

My bet is transmission oil. My dad has an 05, I think, and I blew something one day hauling hay that made fluid leak out like that. Cant remember what it was but I do know it had to do with the transmission.

Well after pissing all over my truck, I discovered the problem. It's the transmission oil cooling lines, the leak is coming from the rubber section of the hose. I had entertained the thought of replacing the whole line until I seen where it disconnects on the transmission. I think I'll just get a pipe cutter and replace the rubber section with some hose clamps and call it a day. If anyone has any objections to what I'm about to do, please speak up.

Should be fine, I know mine attach to the radiator with hose clamps.

If you unbutton your belly button, your ass will fall off.

If your ass falls off, you can't sit down.

If you can't sit down, you can't drive a car.

If you can't drive a car (or truck) you can't get laid (or go duck hunting)

So if you like duck hunting don't unbutton your belly button...........

15 minutes could save you 15%
