Ducks are easier to kill, I usually use a Mossberg pump with 2 3/4" #6's. Too expensive to hunt geese. I get the best deals on shells at Walmart when I buy the promo brand.

The eastern shore of Virginia's vast coastal marshes have kind of spoiled me. Mornings are kinda magical out there. We usually rig with Canada goose, Brant and Black duck floater decoys as those are our favorite species of birds to target. It is not unusual to shoot many different species of ducks over that same rig.
When the young fellas want action we tow out a couple of layout boats with a diver rig and let them blast away until their bloodlust has been satisfied. (they also have to clean them all themselves)
Personally I enjoy dropping those greater canadas in close more than anything else with Brant and the way they bunch up tight just before landing being a close second.

I had a nice shoot last season. We were set up on a lake hunting ducks with a dozen goose floaters nearby. We got a small flock of honkers to land almost next to the boat; I could hear their wing beats and the splash of them landing.

I would rather go duck hunting that goose hunting, but if there are ducks and geese working then I am going to ignore the ducks and try to kill the geese.

Fuck that, shoot what's in range.

Anyway, I've said it before in a different thread, but I'm far and away a duck guy. I do enjoy a good goose shoot, but ducks are by far my favorite, although the best ducks shoots are field ducks which usually come over a goose spread anyway.
To achieve success, one must possess dedication, passion and a boatload of decoys.

Many a duck hunt has turned into a spec hunt around here. Not some much the other way around.

Yeah, we got a spot we are trying this year that is dry wheat field on one side and flooded wheat on the other and the honkers love it, but it is in NE zone where the limit is 2 honkers. To solve this predicament we are going to go and set up our layout blinds between the two, but ducks in the water and geese in the field.

In jumpshooting, you get 3 shots in to those 200 birds and kill maybe 3 or 4 and never see those ducks again. You decoy 200 birds, shoot 3 times and kill 3, and then another flock comes in, you shoot 3 more, and another flock comes in, and you get to decide what bird you want to shoot to finish your limit. After you finish your limit, you can keep landing flocks for the hell of it, while waiting for some geese to come around. I love a good jumpshoot, and used to like it more than decoy hunting, but I've come around to the ways of these old timers.

Wen you shoot into a flock of over 200, you're praying to god you don't shoot over the limit.

Not if your doing it right, and picking out individuals. I've not shot into flocks of 200 but I've had one good hunt where there were regularly flocks of 50-60, and one flock of I would guesstimate around 150 landing. It was awesome, and I hope to repeat the experience.

So...
which is better at proving what a bad ass you are? Killing a limit of geese or a limit of ducks?

This is the direction the thread is going so lets take a short-cut and cut straight to the chase.

Not really trying to prove my badassedness...I'm a dick.
Interested to see what y'all think.

Well? Which kind of hunting is the most bad assed way? I gotta know so I can tailor my hunts to avoid the bad ass crowd. ;)

Been there, done that. I'm not a bad ass. That's a given. I asked a question and you changed the question so your answer is invalid.

So back to the original question. Well?

occasionally you'll see it flooded low spots in fields. But not often enough to pattern em. It'd be a shot in the dark. Rarely on rivers

Though they are scullable on the bay

I enjoyed shooting geese, back when my son still lived here. I prefer to eat geese over ducks any day. However, as a mostly solo hunter, I prefer hunting ducks, over decoys.
