Parent William Baer attempted to express his concern at a New Hampshire school board meeting Monday about a controversial book containing graphic sexual content that was assigned to his daughter. An unidentified school board member tried to cut him off. That’s when the “trouble” began. The book in question, “Nineteen Minutes,” contains a graphic description of rough sex between two teenagers.Parents were unaware of its content until it had already been distributed to their children.WATCH:According to WCVB-TV, the book contains a graphic description of rough sex between two teenagers, which parents were unaware of until the book had already been distributed to their kids.— Click here to read excerpts from the explicit passage —“I was shocked when I read the passage and not much shocks me anymore,” William Baer told EAG News. “My wife was stunned by the increasingly graphic nature of the sexual content of the scene and the imagery it evoked.”

And he was arrested because a cop said he had to leave, and he asked "are you going to arrest me because I spoke longer than my 2 minutes?" At which point he was hauled outside, cuffed, taken to the station, and booked.

Which is precisely why I don't go to those meetings. Seriously.

People who run for the local school board run because they have an agenda. People that don't pay attention to school board elections get what they get and those that do vote get what they want.

I would bet that the guy that got arrested did not vote in the school board election.

And if he voted for the other guy, then it's ok that he got arrested for speaking his mind?

I believe the article said he is lawyer, I am guessing the cop will regret his decision.

Honestly, that is one fuckin' ridiculous statement Ron. Most people don't even know the individuals that are running for these positions, in places where the public actually elects them. All they have to go on is the sunshine, smoke and mirror that is in the voters pamphlet. Again if they even vote or elect them. Sometimes there will be a real dirt bag or douche and the word will get out to the public but, otherwise, most people won't know the persons "real" background or agenda(s).
Usually the board member that wins had less of his/her history known and, the most signs around town. They win because they make themselves the most "familiar" candidate by the time the votes are cast. Name recognition plays a major roll.
Also, I have noticed, over the years, that many of these lower level candidates don't even have anyone opposing them. I suppose that's the voter's fault also.

I agree that not voting sort of limits your right to expect much/hold them accountable, but being arrested is ridiculous.

Are you saying that you only vote for people that have the best 'name recognition' or are you saying that you care so little that you don't look into who is running and what they stand for or are you saying that to you, it doesn't matter anyway?

When someone runs unopposed it is because of apathy on the part of the voters in that area or the perception that they are doing a good job.

Consider this, with a population of 10,000 in a small town or a precinct there might be 6,000 registered voters (sometimes far fewer) in an ordinary election (school board, city council or dog catcher) usually the turn out is low, fewer that 50% registered vote. If there are three people on the ballot for one position and the turnout is 50% it would take only 1,001 votes to win an election and only 1,501 votes to win if two people were running. So our population of 10,000 is represented by someone elected by 10-15% of the population.

Think of how many friends and family you have and then people that you know. Quite often a small group can greatly influence an election but only if they vote.

I have no fucking clue as to whether on not the guy that got arrested voted in the school board election or not but it shows that citizens are not always represented by the elected officials as they might want to be represented. It shows too that when someone is elected they if they can get the other officers to go along with them can shove any crap they want down your neck.

All this time, I thought you were smart enough to know this.

In many places these are appointed positions.

All this time, I thought you were smart enough to know this.I never disagreed with the idea politicians at any level can decide for themselves how they will act and/or "reign", if you will. Our current national politics are a perfect example.

I think the current board probably didn't even come up with this 2 minute rule and, whatever board did, most likely had no intention for people to be arrested because of it. Therefore, to say it is his fault because he probably didn't even vote, that's just ridiculous. Even if he voted for the board member that told him to STFU, it wouldn't change what happened, would it?

I imagine he wasnt arrested for "talking longer than 2 minutes", it was more likely something along the lines of disorderly conduct for raising his voice at the cop.
