I thought about getting some quail, but when they were going for $7 a piece at the auction I shitcanned that idea real quick. I can get pigeons for free from the neighbor, or pay a dollar if he's feeling particularly humane at the time, and doesn't have any he wants to get chewed on, then eaten.
I have a pheasant club about a half a mile down the road. The owner raises Chukar and pheasants. I like training with pigeons also. Especially when you have some one helping you and you can do that deal where a guy gets the dogs attention and let's the pigeon go on the other side of the field. It flys around a few times while the dog can see it. Shoot it, and bam! he can put everything together in his head that birds come from the sky and he needs to be looking up all the time.
